hey guys, i have a bit of a query here its to do with the ping i get whilst playing bf2 and 2142. my pc specs beat my bros pc specs by miles but he always gets a better ping than me, i have about 7.5mb bb and he only has 2mb bb. i live closer to the exchange than him but the only thing different is that i run my router cable through a telephone extension cable then into the wall, my bro just plugs straight into the wall as its close enough. could it be because im running through a extension cable (about 12ft long) i get a higher ping. and yes we tested this on the same server and it dosent just happen on bf2, it also happens on css.

Im curious as to why your running off of telephone cable anyway for a broadband connection.

Are you sure its not a network/ethernet/patch/data (whatever you wanna call it) cable? They look like phone cables, but are fatter, and the connector on the end is larger.

Quite possibly. Especially if they cable is damaged.

Because he uses ADSL over phone lines not cable or any other good stuff the US get before the rest of the world......

Swedge....you can get extension cable specifically for broadband...and yes an extention can degrade your signal...

have you pinged your ip.....to see if there are any stumbling blocks in your routing

Do you have the correct ports open in your firewall....

Ok, I was just making sure, so its DSL. The 12 foot extension cable could affect it....it is definately something to think about.

But also, just because your physically closer to the exchange, doesnt necessarily mean you should get a better ping. Sometimes the way the cabling is ran, you may be physically closer, but the cables may run the opposite direction before they go to the exchange.

How much of a difference is the ping between you and your brother?

Yep you are right..... my cord is about 15m long becasue it goes from my comp, through the basement and blah blah... i got a new one (anything under three meters will fix it)

yeah i pinged my ip and everything is fine, depending on what server we play on for example if i got a ping of 60 my bro would get 30-40max it is more noticable on css rather than bf2 but there is something wrong and would like to get it fixed. joker do you know anywhere i could get the BB extension cable over the net?

would it be a longer RJ11 cable i would need, if it is it would need to be about 5-10 meters would that still b ok

Something that could affect your ping is the sound settings you are using in the game. It may not be anything pertaining to your connection, but the settings of the game. I know you said your pc is better than your brothers, but try lowering the sound settings a bit. Also make sure instead of being on the "T1 LAN" setting your on the "CABLE/DSL" or whatever it says. Just another idea.

are telephone extensions twisted pair? ive never pulled one apart to find out..if they are not then it could be a little emi getting into the cable causing the occasional resend? if so put the router near the wall on as short a cable as possible and run a longer cat5 (which is definately tp) to the router.

Well you might consider that you now have and extra hop count added as you go through a router and your bro doesnt if i understood all correctly. Your router may be giving you the higher ping rate. Try taking your router out of the equation and going directly to the modem and see if you can get a better ping.

me and my bro both use a router, it is a modem aswell. i use a normal telephone extension cable because the socket on my wall isnt close enough with the stock cable that cam with my router. our setups are exactly the same apart from me using the telephone extension cable.

hopefully the rj11 cable works
