Ok...I'm 28 and adopted, birthmother is from the Netherlands, I was born (and conceived ) here in New Zealand.  I get on with her really well...I've met cousins from over there and all (Ajax supporters mostly )...am I allowed to travel/work any more than any other random kiwi who wants to come see Europe?

I've already gone on a google rampage, and am thinking of asking the Netherlands embassy...nevertheless, if you have any info or insight that would be of help...thanks

Oh, and despite having been in NZ for over 30 years she has still retained her Dutch citizenship and hasn't applied for NZ citizenship even though both countries allowing dual citizenship!  Gotta love showing your ear for the camera

I'm planning a future Europe trip years in advance here.

I want to know if I can stay in Europe, but particularly the Netherlands, for longer than the standard 3 months.  I know I can hop from country to country, spending 3 months in each etc, but if I can spend more time in any place I'd like to know if that option is available.

You know how most people have a "mothers side" of the family and a "fathers side"?  I've always thought of her as being kind of a third side and want to meet them, get to know them...I've met her brothers and sisters, and Oma & Opa of course

Well if I'm correct ( Which i'm probably not ) But if you weren't born in the Netherlands then you can't stay longer than 3 months without asking for a visa

Is it 3 months of work or 3 months of total time spent there?

to my knowledge you need a stay license to stay here for longer then 3 months(Which Quite sucks to get here In Holland), if you stay shorter then 3 months then you need a visa which you can also use for other countries that are in the "Schengen Agreement":

Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Greece, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway en Island.

So far as the Dutch government (or any other, for that matter) you're just some Kiwi.  You're a New Zealand citizen, nothing else.  Therefore you're not entitled to any special treatment.

Now, if the Netherlands laws say that someone with a Dutch parent is entitled to Dutch citizenship, then you could probably apply for that.  It'd probably take a long time, though (months, possibly years).  Were you able to get Dutch citizenship, you'd be free to travel to the Netherlands, and any other EU country, as much as you like, and live and work there freely.  I've no idea if the Dutch allow that kind of citizenship, though, most countries have stopped doing that.

Best bet is to contact the Dutch Embassy, or your own (NZ) Foreign Office (or whatever it is you guys call it).  That's what they're there for.  The Dutch Embassy will be able to arrange any visas required, and will have all the information you need.  The only way I can see you getting any benefits from a Dutch mother is if the Dutch government allows you to claim citizenship, so that's definitely something to ask about.  They might give you some kind of cultural benefit (longer visas, say to stay and work for a year or something), but they may not.

Go ask the embassy, just work out all your questions first.  Writing to them might be a good idea.

Good luck.
