Is my videocard overheating?

Noticed a severe slow down on 2142 after about 10-15 mins after startup where my framerate will go from the 70-80 range down to 20-30. I was running 2142 maxed out to start with, but to combat the problem I pulled the lighting and shadows back to medium. Now i get 80-90FPS for about 10-15 mins before it slow down.

When I checked the GPU temps (SLI) they were both 66+ degrees. They are currently at idle and are int he 53-54 degree range.

At first I had suspected my CPU overclock was causing the problem but after underclocking it the same problem occurred.

My setup

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 FX-53 @ 2.4Gz was @2.7 before I reclocked it.
Thermalright XP-120 Heatsink
2x EVGA 7800GT COs
2x Corsair Value Select 1Gb PC3200 Ram
2x Maxtor 7200RPM 16Mb 160Gb IDE HDDs
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Music
Thermaltake Armor /w 25cm Sidefan

And yes the case doubles as a shelf (Dorm room)

The system moves a lot of air, the CPU stays cool enough (43C idle) for a stable OC at 2.7Ghz but the damned cards seem to run hot all the time.

If the problem is overheating can anyone suggest a solution short of water cooling. Im no really planning to go that big here.

Are expansion slot intake fans/ducting a viable option? If so, suggestions?

VF900cu has memory heatsinks, so its 100usd, it's worth it, or get the vf700cu

Welp do what i do, If you feel safe doing it, Run without the side on the case. Believe me it will run Alot cooler for sure. Unfortunately, with todays Hardware running as hot as it does, Sometimes without watercooling or a chiller or phase changer, you have to resort to leaving the case side off.

One thing ive done in the past (with crappy cases that is) was run a duct to a window in the winter and use cardboard to seal the window off. That was back in the Big time overclocking days.

Noone else comes near my computer, so i feel safe running without the side on. My kids know better.

Sorry for the edit, But have you tried a blow hole in the top of the case to exhaust the hot air? Better yet, see those Grates behind and in front of your fans, If you dont want to remove the side, Remove the fans and cut out the Holes and make them one big hole. Youll Get much better intake and exhaust, plus you get quieter computer because air isnt forced through the tiny holes in the fan intakes and exhaust. I do this to all cases and it gives about 5-10C drop in temps all around.

what is your max gpu temp? modern gfx cards should be able to take up to 100°C, maybe a bit less for 7800's. even then you might get some artifacts and not a slowdown. i am not aware of any throttling in gfx cards.maybe you should download riva tuner and let it log your gfx card data during play.

also logging ram and cpu usage & clock during play might be a good idea (some mobos will throttle AMDs when it reaches a critical temperature). how is your hd activity, is your hd suddenly working hard (maybe you are swapping some data to the pagefile, although 2GB of ram should prevent that). is maybe some antivirus or spyware or some other software is taking your resources after a time of "inactivity".

EDIT: have you tried in running in single gpu mode. maybe bf has some issue with sli (it has a known issue with crossfire after all)

btw how do you like your case? i am thinking about buying it and am interested in some hands-on experience

With that cooling I sincerely doubt your card(s) are overheating. Unless your room temp is 90F all the time :Cool:

Actually a good case should run cooler with the side on, if you've plumbed it correctly. Most cases run on air draw so taking the side off basically makes all the fans useless.

The thermaltake armor already has a lange opening in the top /w 80mm fan, cool air is comming out. It also has a 80mm fan right at the top of the back panel.

Whoa, I almost thought that was my desk for a second.

I have a Logitech G5, and a Logitech extreme 3d pro aswell...it's even setup on my desk almost the same way, lol.

Running without the sidepanel will not only attract a megaload of dust, but it won't cool as effiecently either. It will also open the computer to harmful electro magnetic fields that may have otherwise been shielded.

53* - 54*C is no wheres near overheating! Most current videocards can withstand temps up to around 100*C, with a max operating temp of about 120*C (though I'd never run it that high).

Ah yes, the slowdown threshold on the cards is 115*C.

Turned of SLI, I now get 40-50 FPS on the titan and 80-90 everywhere else.

Ok Common myth Running with the case open will not harm anything. Some cases ans alot of designs are made to run in Open air thus exposeing ALL components to the open thus effectively cooling every transistor and diod on every part on every board. Ive seen mega computers set up this way.

Another one is dust, Youll get no more or no less running without the case side. It all depends on placement. If your off the ground, your fine. Most dust and dirt is down around carpet and floor level. So desktop level is fine. Actually, i get No more than a dusting if that within 4 months whichever way i run mine.

Common mistake people make is, HAveing either too mant exhaust fans, or too many intakes. A balance must be achieved if you run with the side on, creating a vacume inside the case. Especially if you have adjustable powersupply fans and fan controllers. Suggestion would be, front intake, Side intake, Top exhaust on low, Back intake on bottom, exhaust on top on low. PSU turned down to medium to low blowing out also. This will give the best cooling option for air cooling with case side on.

If you only have one back fan, try to set it to a lower speed if you have More exhaust fans and speed up your intakes.
