How come everytime I log into Windows XP, the screen loads up, then goes black for a few seconds? The toolbar shows eventually, along with the icons, but the background stays black, then it goes back to normal.

I've had this computer for 5 yeasrs and it only started happening a few months back.

I have the latest drivers and such, I don't know whats wrong.

That's normal, it just your system loading up the startup programs.  It is taking your comp longer to load them for some reason, either your comp is full of tons of old files from the last 5 years, or you have a lot of start up programs running (Could also be virus's and spyware slowing it down.)

Have you ever reformatted it?  I reformat my comp ever six months about.  I just back up all my profiles, e mails, etc.

After about 6 months you will notice a decrease in performance, after a year it's ridiculous, so on and so on.

Even with the best cleaners, it will slow down.

Sounds like you system is clogged with years of shit.  You can try running a reg cleaner, emptying your temp folders, etc.

However if you want it to run like new, spend a few days thinking about what you need.  I suggest taking a few days because you will forget something.  Then back them up, reformat and away you go.

I have tons of hidden files that I can't even get to. It's ridiculous.

I'm not gunna reformat my PC because I'm getting a new one in a few months anyways. And I'll make sure no crap gets on that one.

If  I did reformat this one though, it would take months for me to find all the important stuff and back it up.

Thanks anyways.

to stop some programs starting when you boot up go to start>run> and type msconfig then go to the last tab and untick the items that you dont want starting when you boot up, helped me alot with booting up times

Nah, you can get it up and running to were you had it in an afternoon, I do it all the time (I work on comps for my daily).

You just want to take you time going threw you drives and backing up everything you want to save.  If you have a dvd-rw, it's a lot easier.

Either or, best of luck to you
