I admit it that I have been a stat whore. I was obsessed with getting all of my required badges to make SGT Major before I made First SGT. I would play one kit constantly until I got the required points or time. Getting my Basic Knife was no fun at all. I would get on an I/O server and do nothing but try to knife. I had a piece of paper on my desk where I would make a check whenever I made a knife kill trying to get my 7. It took me quite a few tries and was very frustrating. The game was starting to not be fun for me anymore.
My next goal was to get my aviator badge. I had a stopwatch that I would click every time I tried to get in a plane and fly trying to get my 10 minutes. I did horribly and decided to give up on the badge because it was pissing me off to much and now the game was just not fun for me at all anymore.
I resigned to thinking that I would never get the aviator badge and just gave up trying. I actually gave up on trying to get any medals or awards for that matter and just play.
This weekend my outlook on BF2 changed dramatically. The game was actually FUN when I was not obsessing about getting shiny badges or BR scores. I was more into the teamwork and trying to work with squads to complete goals.
A few days ago I joined a Dalian Plant game late in the match. I was USMC and squadded up before spawning. We had no flags and were getting pounded. The squad leader had managed to swim next to the PLA base nearest the shore and was hiding underneath the concrete overhang so that people could spawn on him and try to take the base.
We kept trying to no avail and eventually he died. Another squad finally took a base on the other side of the map. I spawned on the carrier because our Squad leader was flying a Helli trying to provide some air cover. There were two jets sitting there with no one using them and everyone was lined up for Helli's so I decided to jump in one with the intent of flying over a base and jumping out.
For some strange reason I was actually flying fairly decent with out crashing and I even shot down 2 enemy Helios. Since no one was using the jets I decided to try it out some more and before I knew it I got my basic aviator with out trying and helped out the team by shooting down more copters.
By that time our team had more bases so I spawned with the squad and started helping them take more flags. Again without trying I got my vet AT badge which surprised me because I kept switching between AT/ENG/and Support. We ended up losing but it was close and ended up being one of the funnest times I had playing up till that time.
Now I say the hell with the badges, awards and rank. I know that if I just play and not obsess that these things will come in their own time.
