my friend is dieting and says trans fat is possibly the worst thing you want to consume when your dieting.  On a side note this is interesting: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8916080/

EDIT: Woah wait, you're 5' 9" and 140?  I"m 5' 10" 160lbs and i'm what my friends call a skinny mother fucker.  I assume you just want to eat good.  Naturally stay away from fast food, eat lots of red meat, i love red meat.

Ahh thats what i figured.  I actually found then when i started eating alot of red meat (i would have steaks like once every 3 days, soo good) that i gained muscle and i wasn't even exercising.  Also whey protein shakes seemed to work too, again i gained a noticable amount of muscle on my biceps without doing anything.

Haha, you're pretty thin.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  I'm 5'7" but 150 lbs., and proud.

Trans fat is bad for you because it blocks your arteries. Not eating it isn't going to make a huge difference in your weight. Weight loss is all about eating less calories than you burn. Look to drop high calorie foods. Stop drinking soda and juice, go for unsweetened tea or water instead. In general, a lot of sweet foods are really fattening since sugar is very high in calories. Fried foods are bad because they've soaked up a lot of grease.

There are some tricks to this too. Most vegetables are low-calorie, so you can eat more and feel full faster. Bananas have something in them that make you feel fuller than you are. Drinking a big glass of water 10 minutes before you eat will help you feel fuller. You also want to try to get some whole grains and lean meat in every meal. The carbs in whole grains give you energy and the protein in the meat tells your brain that you've had enough.

In short, cut down on soda, sweets and fried foods. Eat a good balance of food, especially lean meat (chicken and pork)! Drink water.

Good luck on the team!

Just eating protein won't give you muscle. I have a feeling you're in your teens or early 20's. Guys naturally put on muscle mass at that age. The extra protein from the steak wasn't doing it, it was just allowing your body to build at its full potential.

Canadian, watch the red meat if you're trying to lose weight. Stick with chicken, pork and seafood. Protein shakes work well too.

Canadianloser - if you want to lose what fat you've got and build muscle there's only one way to do it (you can even eat just about anything you want whilst doing it) and that's called exercise - seriously, go to a gym, do some weights - even just doing sit-ups, press-ups and 1lb-sugar-bag lifts will all build muscle (of course, a good diet plan, with plenty of protien (eggs, red meat, protein shakes, etc) on top that will help).

Exercise builds muscle, not diet.

(you'd all laugh at me giving muscle-building advice, if you could see me (I have as little muscle-mass as I have fat...))

He's right though.  I eat as much as I want, still maintain this awesome ripped bod.  (Well, maybe not that ripped.)

Man, I remember when I was young and skinny.  I was 5'11" and 135 pounds.  Now I'm old, the same height and 180 pounds.  Then again, at my height 135 pounds was too skinny.  Once I hit about 30 I started adding weight.  To be more in my ideal weight range I really should drop another 5 pounds...but I likes my beer!

Me, Im just big, 6'2" 280 pounds about 85% muscle. One of the fastest ways to lose weight is to simply shrink your stomach. Get a plain cheese burger with just meat and cheese, cut it into 9 equal cubes. Every hour eat 1 of the cubes. Your stomach will shrink and in a couple of days go ahead and try to eat anything more then that....you'll find that you get full in maybe 1 or 2 bites of food

lol, comben. good call.

Canadian, keep in mind that everyone's metabolism is different. Some people are going to give you advice that worked for them, but it may not work for everyone. Pern's cheeseburger thing probably works great for him, but you'll get much better results doing the same thing with a grilled chicken sandwich without the cheese. The bottom line on weight loss is to eat less than you burn. However, if you're working out too, make sure you eat enough protein or you'll actually lose muscle.

Another good thing to know, when you do cardio exercise, your metabolism gets elevated during the exercise and during your body's cool down period (usually about an hour). When you lift weights, your metabolism stays elevated all the way through the recovery period (usually about 3 days). Keeping your metabolism up = burning calories faster = losing more fat.
