Does anyone have an x-fi fatality or platinum that can actually get the front microphone input to work all the time.  when I go into the game mode mixer the record setting always changes back to microphone.  the front input is line-in2/microphone 2.  so I change it to that, but it nevers stays as the default, and it will seem to change during a map switch or at any random interval it changes back to microphone and my voip stops working,  I get the indication that it is working, but no-one can hear me.  short of running my microphone to the rear mic input, is there any way of setting the mic2 input as the default recording device?

thanks

I had that same problem with my X-Fi front I/O drive.
I upgraded to the latest X-Fi drivers and that sorted most of the problem. The drivers would reset the recording device option on every restart, but with the new drivers they dont.
However occasionally BF2 will reset it from Line in 2/microphone 2, to microphone - most of the times its changed back has been when I enter the sound options page.

Other than that, not had a problem since. It still changes now and again, but blame that on BF2 rather than X-Fi. Maybe if you disabled VOIP BF2 wouldnt mess with the recording device option?

Go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > click on the 'audio' tab, then in the middle, where it says 'Sound Recording', and it says 'Select Device', see if you can change anything, or just mess with it. Also, see if the 'Advanced' button is click-able.

Just a suggestion, but I don't own the X-fi.

I know that you said that you do not want to plug the mic into the rear port, but you can use a cable extender and locate the end of this near the front of your case.  I purchused a kit of connections that had one in it from Radio Shack for about $14 (USD).
