I recently decided to order the Windows Vista "beta" CD and try it out. Well, today it finally came in the mail and I decided it would probably be a wise idea to ask here and see if anyone else has tried it and what they thought of it, before I went off to re-install my OS. I intend to use it to get a headstart on understanding the functions and re-occurring bugs in the system so I'll will be up to date when the OS is released where I work. However, I do not want to be a full blown beta tester and I really don't want an early version OS that is more trouble than it is worth since I am installing this on my home computer.

So, if you have it, what do you think of it?

Are there a lot of bugs?

Is performance good or bad?

Will all of my old programs and games still work properly (Steam, BF, GW, other)?

Are there any driver installation issues I should be aware of before hand (I was in the USAF when XP was released and we had problems getting the new OS to recognize and accept some device drivers)?

Is there any hardware or software that Vista is particularly temperamental with?

It is a beta, so there will be some issues, but the RC2 will not have that many. It is rumored that this is the release that MS will use when Vista comes out.

You may have some issues with your older games if you do not install Dricet X 9.0 L, I am not completely for sure if they are releasing the beta for DX10 in the Vista betas. So this is just a heads up.

I would set it up as a seperate partition and make it dual boot. Just dont make the mistake I did, and remove the part of your HD that boots XP.

I gave it a try for a while. It worked fine for me with BF2, steam, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Didn't have any driver issues really. Bugs wise it was fine, couldn't really find anything that affected me. It did feel a little sluggish sometimes, and the whole Trusted Computing stuff kind of irked me after a while (aka, getting a confirmation message EVERY TIME an executable ran). There were also some issues with FFox 2.0 Beta and AIM, but I got the newest versions after and it was fine. It was also a bit of a pain dealing with stupid msgs about how the software won't work with XP blah blah blah, but everything worked fine.

That Aero stuff is really cool though, and I do miss it now that I switched back to Windows XP. The only reason I switched back was because I started to get this weird flicker with my monitor. It happened randomly, and I was too lazy to figure out what it was so I just said screw it and went back to XP. (Had dual boot setup). It was probably graphics drivers related (didn't try updating though).

Just remember, RC1-2 means release candidate so technically it is an OS ready to be shipped out normally. There are bound to be bugs, but it is nowhere like having a Beta version.

You're probably gonna hear that Vista whores all your ram but this is not really true and it's important to know. Vista uses your RAM as a cache, rather than let it sit unused waiting for input. I found that it helped in some regards since it would preload many of the files I use constantly... but sometimes when running a memory intensive app like BF2, it's a bit sluggish since it has to do some memory shifting. Not really a problem since memory hogs already take ages to load, but thought it was worth to note.

And it's the next gen operating system... of course it's gonna take more computer power than windows XP. It sounds like everyone wants it to be cutting edge technology, without having to upgrade anything.

i would say go for it. but on your main pc i would still dual boot.

i run rc1 on my laptop because i lost the xp cd for it and i have very few issues. the only real issue i've come across is not being able to use my lightscribe burner (only the light scribe part). all my other apps run fine though you may have to run the compatibility wizzard.

and as others said it is somewhat of a resource hog but not as bad as some would like to put it, and when running 3d apps it turns some of the unneeded processes off.

Depends on the vidio card you have first off. If its an ATI, I say no, Not at this time. Or if you paly and OpenGL games, and have an ATI card (like COD, UO, MOH) ANy of those games still, you wont A) Have even a Native vista driver support for the OpenGL and games wont start, Or if you use the ATI Driver, the games will run, But be Lifeless and you cant make any changes to anything settings wise because of NO OpenGL support from ATI.

Secondly, Dont believe anyone who says Vista ISNT a Memory Hog. It is. I used it from the first beta up until RC1(used it for a month or so after RC1 Beta ATI Driver). If you have less than 1Gig Ram, then you will get Less then desired performance.

As for the Person asking about DirectX10, No, theres NO dierctX10 included, Because theres NO directX10 Hardware out yet. You cant test something that doesnt have the hardware out yet.

I've been hearing no, beta two is/should be easier to live with ( as expected ) but tbh if it goes wrong, AND IT CAN, it is not an easy thing to put right, not the same as a beta bf2142 e.g.

THOUGH since the finihsed product is only a matter of week's away I say wait.

AMD 64 4600+ Processor
2x Nvidia 7600+ SLi
180 Gb SATA HD

I really don't think that Vista could be THAT big of a resource whore. If it eats up 2 gig of RAM I'll uninstall the bitch on the spot.

Too many bugs right now, I hear it crashes about ever 15-20 minutes.

I'd wait till it officially comes out, and then wait aother few months after its release. That way, you'll have a guarntee of little to no bugs, and it won't crash.

From what I've heard, it DOES eat up that much resources. I personally wouldn't install it for constant use, but if you had a second hard drive I would use it to pla around on, maybe then move your system after you see how it runs.

What good does it really do you to flat out install it over XP though?
