I built one computer already but I don't know what all the little stuff means and it irks me.   The numbers on RAM for example 5-5-12 I saw in another thread, what do those mean?

I don't like dual cores because I've heard that both cores won't go to the game and they are a hassle to deal with.  And I guess you could call me an AMD fanboy because I hate intel.  But core2 or whatever it is, never heard of them.  What makes them so good?

Anyway, I'm looking for the best possible rig for under $2000 or so (not including mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, etc.)  If you guys could help me out here.  For pricing I usually go off of newegg.com but if you have something else then ok.

those are timings on ram.. honestly if you dont know a whole lot about computers.. dont really worry about it (unless they are all really high... thats bad) 

youll want dual core... atm they rape... in games.. and everything else =/

u could get a damn good computer for 2k.  id go for one of the high end core 2 duos.. 2 gigs of ram of course (get ocz.. i got it and <3 it).  if u want single video card.. get Geforce 7950 GX2... or a slightly cheaper X1950 XTX

if your running real high resolutions w/ aa you may go w/ a dual vid card.

sry no real numbers... but thought id throw some stuff out there.  its been a while since ive baught a computer (or looked at prices)

Let's just say the lower the timings on the RAM, the better.

Core 2 Dou's are so good because of the new architecture. I'm not going to explain what that is, so if you want to know, Google it.

They also heavily rely on the amount of on-chip Cache that they have. And, they have smaller transistors which means they're cheaper and run cooler (well that's the theory anyway).

The Speed of your RAM and Latency is important, but one thing people forget about is that with current technologies, the slowest component in computers is the Hard Drive. People build up these screaming computers then install a mediocre Hard Drive and load times can be abysmal.

I picked up a Western Digital SATA Raptor. It runs at 10,000 RPM and is ...for the price, one of the fasted drives available. I just upgraded my gaming computer with 2 gigs of faster RAM and a Raptor and I am consistently one of the first players in the map. Many times I can load and cap a flag before the other team has even spawned for the first time.

Get one of the smaller Raptors ....like 74 gigs or so and install th OS on that ....if you need storage add a second larger 7200 RPM drive.

thats good but
drop the sound card  Audigy is just fine

Add a WD Raptor 10,000rpm  75 GB as a system drive and use the 320 as storage,,,

The Raptor drives are only small fractions faster than these 7200.10 drives.

The review I found showed the Raptor 150GB being 3sec faster when being written too and 2sec slower when being read from. The file was something like 3GB in size.

So pretty much $150 just to speed up your boot-up by 2sec is not worth it in my opinion when you can use the money saved to buy other better parts.

Oh and the X-Fi cards start at only $140 so thats well in his budget.

Never noticed much of a difference between regular 6 or 8 channel surround and X-fi.

I also read somewhere that two 74 GB Raptors running in RAID 0 is faster than just one 150 GB Raptor.

Go with the raptor
