Stuck in the Dirty Souf way too long...

I have a new major problem, help would be much appreciated!

2 nights ago I played for a couple hours with no problem. Then last night I double click on the BF2 icon as usual and the screen goes black as usual (i have the videos off of course), yet this time it just sends me back to the ddesktop. No error message or anything. I try again and again with the same result. I tried putting the videos back in and still nothing. Just black and resolution resizing and then back to desktop.

I had a friend who said that happened to him and he reinstalled which fixed it. I reluctantly reinstalled along with SF and patch 1.4 (takes forever and I hate reinstalling things). I crossed my fingers fired it up... same result!

Has anyone else experianced this frustration? If so please help. As I said, I had just played the night before and changed nothing on my computer at all. just shut down the computer, slept, went to work, came home and tried to play again.

Try starting in window'ed mode and read the error message.

Ok, I tried to run in windowed mode... same thing. The window opens then closes after a few seconds with no error message. Damn! I want to play today on my day off!!

Thanks for your suggestion though.

Sounds like a graphics card problem to me. Have you updated drivers or anything recently?

I hadn't updated drivers between the first time I tried and it didn't work, but last night after the reinstall didn't work I updated to catalyst 6.10. Note; I changed nothing the first time it didn't work... just shut down computer for roughly 24 hours, came back and it didn't work.

I am, however, going to try to revert to catalyst 6.8 just for kicks.

Try a system restore back to when the game was working and see if it works. If it does it's a software problem. If not, chances are it's a hardware problem.

The first thing you need to do is ensure it is not a hardware problem (which I doubt).

Also, for the record there is a dedicated forum here just for BF2 help. http://forums.bf2s.com/viewforum.php?id=66

9 times out of 10 a system restore screws up more than it fixes....especially when involving drivers.

Re-install video drivers with the latest available (I think Cat 6.10 are out, if not then Cat 6.9 are the latest).

Don't just do a roll-back, completely remove the drivers from Safe-mode. You can remove them completely without entering Safe-mode, but I like Safe-mode.

Then restart and re-install latest drivers.

He's already got the latest catalyst installed, it hasn't helped. System restore has never caused me any issues except with an uninstallation of Norton which is notoriusly bad for uninstalling. It wasn't system restores fault, it was Norton.

If you're uncomfortable using system restore then delete the graphics card drivers in safe-mode and then reinstall 6.7 or 6.8 (whichever you had there before). If this works fine, but if not it hasn't necessarily ruled out a software error.

I restored my system, but then windows wouldn't restart, I believe it is because of the catalyst 6.10 because there was an ATi file in the stoppage error. So i went to safe mode and unrestored. But what if I revert back to 6.9 and then restore?

Not a clue now. Looks like things are so snarled up with poor installations and uninstalls that it doesn't know what it's doing.

I had this same problem yesterday. I did a system restore from two days ago and it was fine. In that time before the fuck up and the previous restore point, I installed the xfire update, bf2cc and various windows updates. I restored and then did the xfire update, bf2cc and the windows update (but just .net 1.1) and had no problems.

Only thing I could suggest trying is downloading catalayst 6.8, uninstalling catalyst and drivers, go into device manager and delete the video card, then restart the computer. Hopefully it should should detect the graphics card upon restart and ask for the drivers. Tell it it's a standard VGA card so that it will stop bugging you and then when the computer is all loaded up install 6.8.

That might work but then again it might not. Not knowing the specifics of your PC I really can't say now.

Try it at your own risk.

When you used system restore how far did you go a long way back? I was just thinking exactly as above, did you go far enough back? What has been installed recently?

Ok I realized I wasn't totally honest. I removed BF2142 Demo from add/remove programs, I wonder if that changed something, but then again I did a full reinstall...

I am going to try to restore to a differant time.

Have you removed it manually. Trust me it makes a difference.

Ok, thanks guys for all the help and suggestions!

I removed all video drivers and reinstalled catalyst 6.9 and now it works. I have no idea in hell why since it didn't work the first time I had 6.9, but I'm not complaining.

You guys are awesome, hope I don't have any more problems.

See? I told you restoring was a bad idea.

EDIT:

Didn't I already say to do that?

A system restore can easily be undone.
