You for sure it was not something like a charity game? I know that in the preseason, college teams play teams that for charity, or for people that are in the D-League of the NBA. I know that for a long time that the UK Wildcats (Go Cats!!!!) played a team called Athletes In Action. They were basically an amateur team that had ex-college players on the team.

Looks as if it is a marketing thing.
BTW McDonald's has two basketball teams. They are high school students who are picked by McDonald's to play in an "All-Star" game.
