From this article:
"I’m very pleased to let you know you this morning (or afternoon, or evening, depending on where you are when you read this) that the Windows division has revised the retail license terms for Windows Vista in a significant way. Namely, the terms regarding license-to-device assignment of the retail product (including Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) now read as follows:
* You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices."
If I'm reading my 'Microsoft PR' correctly, what this boils down to is that while I can upgrade a computer that has Vista on it, or move the license from system to system, I may not share it between as I do with XP. While this change to the license is for the better, I hardly call it that much more helpful to a computer enthusiast, who would be working with more than one system. Charging $200+ for one operating system is outrageous enough, considering the free nature of Linux; charging $200 extra per Vista computer is outrageous. In attacking piracy in this and other similar manners, Microsoft will be alienating its own customers, and giving the piracy motive yet another boost at the same time. While this may not matter to an 'average computer user,' anyone like me who remembers the far more simple and tolerant days of DOS and pre-95 Windows should be outraged, especially as compatibility moves away from XP and into the realm of Vista. From the following licences, only one user is allowed per copy. Yes, even the 'Ultimate' edition.
Vista Home Premium License
Vista Business Edition License
Vista Ultimate Edition License
We have the technology; let's abuse it! Way to go, MS number crunchers! Extortion for the win. And now for an appropriate quote:
The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers. -Princess Leia
[edit]Price Sheet:
Old Windows -
XP Home - <$90
XP MCE - <$110
XP Pro - <$140
XP Pro 64 - <$140
New Windows -
Vista Home Basic - $200
Vista Home Premium - $240
Vista Business - $300
Vista Ultimate - $400
Well, a high-end Vista is going to cost more than an average DIMM pair, CPU, motherboard or video card. "Congratulations to all our fine Micro$oft customers" (yes, this is the first time I have used the '$' in that name).[/edit]
