Here's a little guide on how to be a good Squad Leader, what points you get, and what its all about.

Q. Why should I be a squad leader?
A. You can make a big impact on your team's chance of victory; you get an extra unlock; you get to choose your own orders; and finally you get quite a few points.

Q. Extra Points? How do I get those?
A. Well, you set attack or defend orders at a base. If a member of your squad makes a kill at that base, you get a Career Point (and so do they. More poitns for everyone). Career Points show up at the end of the round, and go towards unlocks. They aren't part of your normal score. (This means you can come in the middle of the scoreboard but still have the most points).
Also, by helping out squadmates in the base (revive/heal/resupply/repair) you get career points.
Move orders give you no points, so don't bother using them.
Accepting commander orders gives them extra points. You don't get anything, but he's more likely to give you orbital strikes/supplies if you do.
To give attack or defend orders, use the squad screen and right click on the flag, or press T when pointed towards the flag icon and hit "set order".

Q. How do field upgrades work?
A. Every time a squadmember or you makes a kill in a base where you have set an order, your squad gets a point towards the next field upgrade. When you have enough, the whole squad gets an unlock, which they may use as long as they stay on the server (you can leave the squad, switch teams, etc, and you keep your unlock). You may only Field Upgrade one level above what you have unlocked (for example, if you have the Herzog Shotgun unlocked for assault, you may field upgrade to the NetBat infantry ID).

Q: Extra unlocks?
A: They are 3. they must be unlocked in order:

1. Squad Leader Spawn Beacon:

By far the best Squad Leader Unlock. It requires you to have at least 1 other squad member. By placing it, squad members can't spawn on you, but they can spawn on this beacon (as can you). It is very good for capturing bases, as if you lay one down in or near a base you can keep attacking very quickly. You can also set one up behind an enemy base and attack from the rear.

2. Otus UAV Drone:

A small drone that flies over your head, it acts as a mini-UAV, spotting targets and putting them on your mini-map. Its range is rather limited, though, and is only useful on small maps or when capturing bases. Another downside is that it gives away your position; when lying prone, it still hovers at a bit over head height.

3. Accipiter Attack Drone

Looks exactly like the Otus, but is armed with 2 guns instead of a UAV. It has a short range, and only attacks targets with NetBat red diamonds on them - which means you or your squad must spot the targets (or use the Support Pulse Meter unlock) for it to work. It often tries to shoot through walls though, and is very noisy, so don't use it while being sneaky.

4. What's this NetBat thing?

NetBat is the red diamonds you'll see around the map. Whenever you or your squad spot an enemy, he'll be framed by a red diamond for about 10 seconds, allowing you to see his location. This allows enemy movements to be seen by the whole squad.
Each class has netbat modifiers:

Assault has Infantry ID, which shows you the kit of the enemy when you look at him (very useful, as you might want to duck behind cover if he's a sniper/support).
Engineer has Vehicle ID, which shows the health of the vehicle.
Support has Camo ID, which detects Recons activating their camo and puts red diamonds on them.
Recon Has NetBat Fade Delay, which makes your squad's red diamonds last longer.

5. So how do I be a good squad leader?

Try and get a full squad so you can get lots of upgrades.
Don't keep switching orders.
Place spawn beacons near the bases you want to attack/defend.
Give relevant orders - if your squad is all attacking one base, don't send them to another.
Don't use the drones - they only benefit you. use the beacon instead and save yourself 2 unlocks.
Tell your squad when you are switching orders.

I hope this guide has helped.

nice guide. Good information on the important things and its easy to understand. You also cleared up some of the things that some ppl might not know about (The Different ID's) and the extra points (the way they work).

Man I'm copy and pasting this everywhere now...

Here is a summary of squad points that I have made before.

For those of you who are confused with how to get squad points, here are some ways you can earn them.

#1 When an instructions are given by squad leader, you follow them. e.g. 'Move to this location', 'Attack this position'. When the instructions are followed and carried out near the instruction point, you will receive a point. Move order doesn't give any points, therefore, after moving to the point, squad leader needs to make sure that another order has been given to attack/defend the nearest flag.

#2 Kill an enemy when you are close to your squad leader. +1 point

#3 Kill an enemy who is near your squad leader. +1 point (Snipers, try to pick out the enemy who is attacking your squad leader. It works well)

#4 Heal, Repair, Resupply your squadmates. Usually awarded a squad point along with you heal, repair, ammo point.

Now time for squad leader success points.
#1 Give instructions so that your squad can get the squad point. Usually when they are given a point, you will be given one too.

#2 Follow your instructions as well, don't just sit back and relax. Do your job.

Hope this clarified some confusion.

EDIT: Updates on the Squad Point #1

How do you issue an order other than the move order? Because when I press "T" and issue an order it only issues a move order.

You have to point at a flag.
If you point at the flag, the flag will be highlighted YELLOW. When it is highlighted, issue an order.

People without microphones should not be allowed to Lead or Command. EVER. Sure, its possible, but people listen up more if they know that if they dont follow, they can and will be verbally abused, you also get that little bit of information across better.

I totally agree with you.

Also, WTF is up with those servers without VOIP??
Are the admins in there a constant commander whores who can't really command and are getting flamed all round long?

Squad Leaders will climb the ranks faster if they have a habit of issuing tactically correct orders. The same is true for Commanders. (38)

I find your post quite intriguing but I disagree with that statement. (I JUST fully read it. LoL)
The reconnaissance drone DOES benefit the entire squad. Also you mentioned about it giving away position, but this only matters if your squad is fighting behind the enemy lines and has to rely on the guerrilla tactics to survive.

My suggestion for those who are fascinated with drones is to go with the BEACON first when you spawn THEN when you spawn again, if the beacon is still active, go with the drone. (Of course, this is if you decide to unlock the drones BEFORE any weapons, which I doubt that many people will do anyway...)

Yes, if your squad is within 1m of you. The range is very limited, and it forces your squad to stay glued towards you if they want to use it.
