Well sometimes when I start my 2142 it just stays on the small screen with the walkr on for about 2 minutes thn pops up please insert the correct disc and retry and it takes me several attempts to get it going and it really pisses me off.

Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it?

BTW all other CD/DVDs work fine

I have the same problem.  Sometimes if the 2142 dvd is in the drive on startup it will lockup the computer until I pop the drawer, then business as usual.  A sloppy pressing somewhere.

I would suggest creating an image or mini-image of your DVD, and loading that off your hard drive using an image mounting tool (such as Daemon-Tools) and Pr0t.St0p v1, an anti-blacklisting tool. That would essentially trick the game into thinking you have the DVD in your drive and should load fine without SecurRom complaining of drive emulation or whatever.

I personally don't have the issue, having downloaded the game on EA Downloader (now known as EA Link). There is no DVD or optical media for the game... nor a really easy way of reinstalling if I reformat.

But yeah, I couldn't really tell you how to make a good mini-image. There are guides on the Internet.

And do NOT use cracks... it's obvious you will get punkbusted for using modified game files, which cracks are.
Mini-images are the more space-efficient way of doing things, but you can make a 1:1 copy of your game DVD as well.

Someone may have made a mini-image and posted it on the Internet, but I haven't found one in the few minutes I spent searching before making this post.

Samtheman53, I know that this may sound strange, but do you have a Phillips DVD drive?  I, myself had a Phillips DVD drive that would read a DVD and CD, like it sould have.  About a three months after I got it, it quit reading DVDs, but still read CDs.  Then about half a year after I got it, it will not read CDs.  I also had an ex-co-worker, who had the same issue with his Phillips drive.  Becuase of this, I did some research, and some Phillips DVD driver will have issues, a lot of them are OEM drives.
