when i start it it goes thought all the normal boot stuff then it says "A Disk Read Error Has Occurred Press CTL+ALT+DEL to restart". so I did that didn't work tried booting it from back up CD dient work then I Tried the xp CD did the repair still didn't work! any idea's.

My media center PC specs are:
AMD something 1._GHz
512MB ram
ATI 9550 256MB
300GB IDE hard drive
windows xp home
NOT A CLUE WHAT THE MOBO IS
THis computer has all my music pics videos every thing like that on it!

I had something similar to this the other week. Nothing like installing xp or going through recovery would work. I ended up downloading a DOS boot program and booting of it from a cd, re-formated then reinstalling xp. works fine now.

Make sure you don't have any bootable media in the CD-ROM's and unplug all USB devies. Check BIOS to see if your HDD is set to as the main boot device. If this doesn't work, you have a dead Hard drive my friend.

Is there any way to get the data off the dead disk

If you have another computer, you can pull the drive and stick it in there. Then you can either copy over your stuff or try to run checkdisk to fix any errors.

but if thers an other install of xp on that other disk will that muck it up. AND IS IT AS SIMPLE AS PLUGGING THE DRIVE IN T MY GAMING COMPUTER OR DO I HAVE TO DO SOM EOTHER STUFF

Yeah, there won't be a problem booting with both HDs in one machine. It'll just recognize the original drive as the boot drive and the second as slave. Which reminds me, you'll need to set the jumpers on the drives to set the original as the master and the suspected sick drive as slave. There should be a diagram on each drive showing how to do this.
