ok so heres the story, I had an AGP 6800 GT that fried and MSI is gonna ship me a 7900 GT for free. the problem is that it is PCI-E so my Mobo wont support it, which means UPGRADE!!! the way i see it all I need is a new processor and motherboard so i can support PCI-E. but im in a bit of a pickle as I would like to get one of the Intel Core 2 Duos (which is a 64-bit processor) but I only have Windows XP 32-bit. The intel site said I can run it but i had some friends who couldnt get a PC runnin because they did not have a 64-bit OS for their processor. so here are my questions:

1. Can I run a Core 2 Duo (64-bit) on Windows XP 32-bit
2. If so how much do you think it would hurt performance.
3. (just double checking) DDR RAM is compatable on a motherboard that supports DDR2 right?
4. (Opinion) Any motherboard suggestions? (I already have an idea of what I want)

I cant spends SCADS of money on this. As for the OS, I'll probably upgrade sooner or later. If Microsoft ever gets its act together with Vista (WTF? you can only install it twice) I was gonna get that. If not maybe I can hook up some Student Deals. Thanks All

Once, twice total.

Ms was kind enough to send me a key good enough for 10 installs .

Unless the motherboard specifically has support for both DDR and DDR2 you will need new RAM if you have DDR.  None of the Intel chipset boards support both standards.  I believe ULi is the only one with such a chipset.

Try this motherboard for a cheaper way to upgrade - http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInf … ctID=14829

It also surports conroe cpu's, both types of ram and has an AGP plus an Pci slot

1. defenetely
2. in fact the c2d is slightly more efficient in 32 bit mode
3. if the mobo is ddr2, ddr wont fit. you'll need a ddr mobo
4. asus p5b deluxe

Yes, but I noting that none of the Intel chipset boards support both.  It looks like ULi is not the only one, and VIA also has a dual RAM type supporting board.  However, most people that buy Intel CPUs also want Intel chipsets on their motherboard.
