I know this sort of thing was in BF2, and was considered a "easter Egg"

I'm not sure if this has been posted before.. i dont think it has.. anyways.. 

I was messing around in a battlerecorder file yesterday after doing some crazy shit in the Talon attack heli..


(that thing can actually move pretty good if you know how to use it)

Why are these skins here?

Are they some how used in the coding to skin the vehicle?

Aren't each of those cubes comprised of the vehicle skin they are in.  Look at the EU tank one, you can see it clearly.  Little odd, but you can see the tracks on the thing.

Ya.. each "cube" (the only one that is a cube is the Titan one) has the vehicles skins printed onto it..

So they don't lose them?    You know what they're like when it comes to trying to 'fix' things in game lol.  Actually I have no idea.  I think I've seen something like this before, but I don't know where.

It'll probably be based on the same idea as the Source engine's 3D skyboxes.

the models are probably textureless and those cubes map the skin onto the vehicle dynamically.


might also be a cause of lag on the titans.

you can't really see it on the pic but this was a screen of me somehow falling through the titan, into the ground and being able to glide across it about 200 km/h unable to use weapons but able to go out of bounds unpunished. Then i went too far and CTD'd

Yeah, my question exactly; as far as I know, not one server I've been to has had a recording option.  Well, yet anyhow...get frapps if you want to record now, go to www.fraps.com and download it...or EA should take a page out of Valve and put in a basic demo recorder that you can activate at will...to get all those beautiful montages.  Note, if fraps causes lag, lower settings a bit; sometimes it takes a bit out of the CPU.

Same way you do in BF2.


Create a local game..


Type "demo.recorddemo "name"

Then do your shit..

Type "demo.stoprecording"

Then go into the BF2142 Files, get the DEMO File, move it to "my documents" bf2142 File.. and play it in the community tab..

its a little fucked up..


It doesn't have the common rose like Bf2.. well, at least you cant see it.. so if you dont know the BF2 demo Commands then your pretty much fucked..

They also have that in SF i seen that. Looking at a battlerecorded video of myself in a hind if you zoom in all the way you see the same kind of boxes with ofcourse different textures. Since BF2142 is a sellable mod of BF2 im not surprised that its also in BF2142.

If you look inside the j10 on bf2, they have one of those.

if their engine requires this sort of texturing in order to work correctly than their engine aint that great.

however, it looks like this is just bad modeling and texturing on DICE's part. for one, you shouldnt even be able to see the poly faces of the tank hull from inside it. why they  made those particular faces (the ones which appear to have whole uv maps on them) double sided is beyond me.

i can tell you why they have probably have  entire maps on one face though. each tank or vehicle has its own shader which contains a uv texture map. the location of poly faces on these maps determines how the face will look depending on how the map was textured. when you dont need to see a face, (such as a poly face inside a tank, which you never see unless your noclipping) it doesnt matter where you put that face on the map because it might look like utter crap, but no one is usually going to see it anyway.

than again, they may have forgot to delete these unecessary faces and then just missed them during uv mapping.

i dont know how much slower these texturing screw ups make the game run, but they are 1024x1024 images that really dont need to be there.

The cubes inside the vehicle/titans is more than likely what's known as a "doo-dad" (yes, that's right, that's the term used). It's like an anchor for a moving 3d object.
