The way I've heard it, is that the Arabs used to use 72 to mean an unlimited amount of something, kinda like if we said they'd get a million virgins. Maybe they just weren't as used to big numbers back then as we are now...

Religions have an odd proclivity to find loopholes in such things.
They have an exceptional ability to be deaf to logic.
Example 1: The sun spinning around the Earth, even after mathematically proven wrong.
Example 2: Westboro Baptists, the hick inbred Christian (if you can really call them that) of the terrorists.
So an Imam just has to say that Allah tells him that you're in heaven when frozen, or dead ,or some other BS, and the terrorists believe him, and keep fighting, and that's the end of that.

Ahh, here's an immoral idea, we come up with an airborne agent that gives people amnesia. Then, we deploy it over the entire middle east, and tell them all that they were affected by some sort of radiation or something from some sort of asteroid fragment in Mecca. Then we tell them that they're nice people, who don't have any sectarian divisions at all, who are athiests, or christians or bhuddists, or for the ultimate in irony...JEWS.
