well, i reformatted yesterday, and my windows decided to hate me. i boot up, it goes to login screen. i can be there as long as i want, but i can't do much from the login screen...

i log in, within 10 seconds, there is a repeated "hhsgfksaghf" sound from my sound card, and then, system crash. it will restart instantly afterword and go to the login screen no problem.

here is what i had installed before this issue came about (in order):

xp pr0
mobo drivers (RAID accelerator)/network drivers.
firefox
avg free
sp2/updates
ATI cat 6.10 (d/l)
soundblaster Audigy 2zs (cd)
bf2
bf2142
steam (counterstrike s/day of defeat s)
xfire
itunes (last program installed, on reboot it started doin this)


what i have planned when i get home:

1: try booting again/safe mode boot
2: system restore
3: repair install
4: total reformat


any other ideas on what to try? hoping to avoid another format, but if it has to happen...

any ideas on what could cause this? motherboad? memory? any ideas on how to see what is wrong?

any help/suggestions at all would help and be appriciated. solver will receive karma for a week (yes, 1 full week, 7 days, 168 hrs)

Ouch.  Seems like your computer is ready for a nice reformat.  *shrug*

It's good for Windows to just wipe it clean every once and a while.  I don't care if you're using 98, XP, or Vista...Windows is still a bitch like that.

I would try to boot in Safe Mode first, but does your sound card have the drivers installed? If you can't install them in Safe mode, and it continues to give you these issues, try removing the sound card and booting the Machine. If you get no weird sound/system crash you've found your issue. Hardware!!

k. yes, the drivers are installed. ill try that.

and in case you didnt pick it up, i just did a reformat...i do one once every 3 months. its AFTER the reformat and install of above drivers/software listed.

I'd try removing the sound card from your computer.

Boot up.  If your computer boots properly then that narrows the problem down to the sound card, not RAM, video card etc.... Uninstall the sound card drivers, shut down, put the card back in and reinstall the drivers.

If that doesn't work (PC still won't boot) then I'd say there is a good possibility that your sound card is toast.

So to determine if it's toast or not, try it in another computer.  If it works in the other computer, then it's an indication that you have an IRQ conflict.  (haven't said that in a while).  Change the IRQ address for the card.

That's about all I can think of at the moment....

k. took sound card out. didnt work.

doing a repair install now be back soon. (im typin this on parental computer)

k. repair install did it...sound card works...who knows wtf it was...as long as im good now eh?

ty you guys for suggestions...karma for all, but not for a week...
