Beta allows feedback, and is there to help polish a game before it's release, find bugs, final balance tweaks, etc etc. Demo is usually just to give fans and potential customer's a taste of the game before or shortly after it's release.

demo is for people who don't know if they're gonna buy the game and people who want to play it as much as they ccan before it releases
