my board didn't come with screws that secure the board to the plate in the tower.  can i use extra screws that would be used as hard drive fasteners?    or do they need to be special?  please help as i want to get this thing going.

by the way, the guy that took my old mobo also took the screws, so that's where they went.

You should be able to use extra screws as long as they fit the threads of the brass spacers that you put into your mobo tray.  But you should have those felt pads that go between the mobo and those spacers to isolate it also.  If you don't have all of that just go by a computer shop or compUSA or something

Screws don't come with the mobo, they come with the case, go to a place that sell's PC parts, and buy them. You can get like.. 20 o them for 2 bucks!

Do not for one second think about trying to cut it short. Because all too often, that's exactly what happens. My friends Dad toasted a motherboard and a proc, both brand new, because of standoff problems. Luckily he had the "extended" warranty on them both and got them easily replaced.

Go to a computer store. Buy motherboard standoffs and the accompanied screws.

Make sure that if you get screws, they're the right threading. I don't know if anybody's agreed to standards yet, but I have over ten jars full of different kinds of chassis screws.

also, if my plate that the mobo rests on already has, I want to say pre-made indents protruding where the screws go into, do i still need standoffs?  the whole idea on standoffs if so the mobo doesn't make contact with the plate correct?  if this is true then i don't have to worry about it as the pre-made indents make sure of this.  Or am i missing something?

as long as theres something lifting the board up a quarter inch or so then thats fine, its so the contacts on the underside of the board dont touch the plate.

As for the screws theres only 3 main types that fit 99% of boards, small thread usually found holding fdds and roms in, larger thread usually with a shouldered head for fixing the mobo, fastening pci cards and holding side panels on and a large thread with a round head for hdds.

copy that, my mobo board is currently at least "1/4 off the the plate its screwed to.  if i use those brass standoffs it'll be a half inch, too far in my opinion.  this pic shows where i stand now without any standoffs.

shame you couldnt take a pic of the risers on the plate itself but I can see its raised up the appropriate amount so I guess its ok, as long as every pressed riser has a corresponding screw hole on the mobo to screw to with none spare under the board.
