Yeah, when and if you get a windows cd, you're going to have to call Microsoft and explain what happened and hope they give you a new cd key. I'm telling you bro, at least give the Acronis thing a go before wiping your old HD.

yeah, home-brewed PCs ftw.

i would just get the code of windows off the back of your PC and then use it with a friends windows CD (should work, make sure that it is the same type of windows cd as the code is for (SP1? SP2?).

installing everything is not that bad...takes about 5 hrs, and most of the time you are just waiting. i would go ahead and just do that. the iso is too iffy if the harddrive is bad.

He doesn't have to wipe the old one if he installs the new one. And if it doesn't work then he can try to clone the old

Noo not a mac cd, look if you have never installed an o/s before you are not going to find it easy...sure try it if you want to educate yourself but belive me it takes time and youll make mistakes, perhaps even have to start over again.

There are plenty of sites with tutorials and help on installing, its pointless trying to repeat them here, suggest you read up on it a LOT before carrying on.

Oh and assuming you have a legit windows sticker on your box then any old cd with the right version of windows will work, when you are done, give M$ your code within 30 days and tell them it was a reinstal.

Sorry to hijack the thread but, why am I the only person who hasn't gotten a 30 day reminder from Microshit?
What version of windows requires this? My XP Pro CD doesn't require anything other than the verification from Microshit which can be patched over.

OMG...
First, that little plastic thing, do you mean a 'Jumper'?
What's the make and model of your hard drive?
Only plug one power connection into the hard drive, 4-pin molex or the SATA connector, never both.

Ok, forget about the IDE stuff I said...obviously, you have SATA. As long as you can see both hard drives in question, you should be fine. Just go through the wizard and tell it which hard drive is the source, and which is the destination drive.

Yeah, in the initial post screen (the first screen on bootup) it should show Primary Master, Primary Slave, etc.

Just keep moving the jumpers around til you find the slave position. Like I said it can't hurt the drive, it either works or it doesn't. You'll get it eventually. It usually takes me a few tries too.

Should be a Jumper guide on the top of the drive. If not, tell me the make and model number!

*   STEP 1: Decide which hard drive will be the startup (master) drive. If this drive was the startup drive previously, or if it's a new hard drive, then the master drive designation will already be set.
    * STEP 2: To change the designation of a new drive to be a slave drive, skip to step 4.
    * STEP 3: To change the designation of an existing drive to be a slave drive: Turn off the computer, unplug the power cord, remove the drive from its drive bay, and disconnect the drive from its power cord and ribbon cable.
    * STEP 4: Check the hard drive documentation or the label on the drive itself for master/slave jumper settings.
    * STEP 5: Find the jumpers on the circuit board of the drive. Jumpers are plastic plugs with metal sleeves that form a circuit between a pair of pins. Jumper locations are labeled on the board with a J followed by a number (such as J20).
    * STEP 6: Use tweezers or very small pliers to remove or reposition the jumpers to the configuration shown in the documentation or on the disk label.
    * STEP 7: Install (or reinstall) the hard drive in the computer. (See "How to Install a Second Hard Drive.")

Refer back to my picture on page 1. Se the little diagram on the back of the hard drive that shows you the jumper positions? You will have to remove the hard drive from the case so you can see it. An yes, you have to put a jumper in the correct spot for it to become teh slave!
