Hi all,
I'm just wondering if I could get some pointers.

My current system;
P4 3.0GHz Presscott
X800XT 256MB
2G OCZ 2.5-3-2-5
2 x SATA I (200G, 250G)
Lite-on DVDRW
Antec True Power 550W

BF2 settings; Custom atm tweaked for smooth paly from the BF2 forums here.

had this rig for about 3 years, just added the x800 and OCZ in the last 4 months. I'm a bit curious as to a few things, in the last 2 weeks I've had some game lag which is not normal. Before I put in the 2G OCZ I had alot of this issue at the start of maps or in large maps when the shyte was hitting the fan.

I remember having a similar issue over 12months ago, turned out to be my cpu overheating as the thermal paste had gone rock hard, this time I'm not sure if its due to a new cooling fan I put on (thermaltake tr) everytime it occurs I alt tab and check my temps using everest home edition, the cpu is fine sitting on about 54/55 degC. Under normal load the cpu sits at about 48/49 degC, normally it runs at 52 degC (as I fold 24/7).

So I didn't think it would be the cpu (but not sure), the other thing is that my gfx cards temp goes up but 12-15 degC from 50(normal use) too 73-75(when in BF2. the card is meant to be rated up to a little over 100 degC.

when I first put in the X800XT and the 2G OCZ I could run the game on high settings with no noticable lag, but now I notice lag in intense battles.

On another note I would be interested in some links or advice on comparing AMD cpus to intel as I'm thinking of switching over to an AMD system, just not sure what the equivilant amd to intel is.

appreciate comments and advice
cheers

Is it the new patch? Or was this with the old patch too?
misconfiguration

55*C is a pretty high CPU temp, I'd consider getting a aftermarket heatsink!

To the onset of lag, ever done a defrag? Know what routine maintenance consists of? As for the heat, dust in the CPU fan? Pentium 4 Prescotts are notorious for running hot. A good after market fan will do the trick, prepare to lay down $50 for a Zalman 9500.

My P4 2.6Ghz Northwood CPU stays about 44.3c under load...stock heatsink. 36c motherboard. 3 80mm fans. 5600XT GPU 53c
My AMD 64 2.4Ghz CPU stays about 33.6c under load...Zalman 7700cu fan. 29c motherboard. 2 120mm fans. 7800GTX GPU 61c.

If you're going to build a new system, check into Intel Core 2 Duo for top of the line gear at the moment, but AMD 939 for a cheap, almost out of date hardware that runs cool, AMD AM2 for a dual core, DDR2 option - in which you don't have to buy new RAM.

yeah it happened about 2 weeks before the new patch

yeah I defrag regularly and maintain my system.

the presscott I have has always ran at 49-53 deg C with no problems, from what I read a while back this is not a problem for this cpu. the heat sync is clean.

I'm starting to think it may be due to changing my cpu cooler from the stock intel one to the thermaltake tr2, while the cpu temp has not changed, this is the only thing that has changed since the problem began.

I bought a thermaltake big typhon but have since realised I don't really have the room to install it (silly me), the PSU is a  bit to close for the fan to sit in a nice spot ( there is less that 10mm between the typhon fan and the intake for my psu).

I guess I'm trying determine if its my cpu struggling or my gfx card as I never noticed the card getting so hot before.

as for a new system, I wont be doing a complete new system, just looking at switching to a respetable amd setup while keeping most of my existing hardware. I'm just not sure what amd compares to my existing presscott. A mate has a athlon 3700 (san diego core) that seems to be a bit more powerful.

thanks for the comments guys.

forgot to mention, that once I tweaked my gfx settings ingame (from one of the tech sticky's) I don't seem to get any lag. but the settings are on low for some things. I don't mind the game play at these settings. fps is around 70 and down to 40 in really intense fighting, and average would be high 50's.

Anything AMD socket 939, try a dual core chip. I suggest this because you have DDR (and not DDR2) and for a 'respectable' AMD system, the AMD Athlon 64 line kicked ass.
I suggest Asus motherboard, A8N SLI Premium.
The stock cooler may/may not be as efficient as the Thermaltake TR2, but Prescotts = hot.
Sorry to roast Intel fans' asses, but ANY AMD 3500+ plus kicks P4 asses, heat dissipation, performance, quiet, etc. etc. AMD 64 2.4GHz > P4 3.0GHz...

ah thanks that is what I had read of the net, I was also looking at the athlon x2 3800 939.

thanks for the info
