someone who is really good at one thing (like jet, helo, sniper etc) or a player who can play any role fairly well?

i prefer to play with versatile players than players who cant/don't stray from what they are good at. sometimes a jet doesn't help capture flags. an excellent pilot can control a map from the get go, but they cant win a map back (usually). and even though they make it easier to keep everything under control, they become a nuisance when you are trying to actually gain control (who has been bombed just as they were about to cap a flag?).

helo's are more versatile but having a guy sit on the helo pad waiting for it to spawn doesnt really help. im not sure whats worth more, a squad of decent players or a decent pilot/gunner combo?

Versatility is always a good quality but everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. I think I'm decent with everything, I can use every kit and every vehicle and keep a positive score anyway. The best is when you are teamed up with people who all have different strengths and work together.

Personally I prefer versatility.  Like Disabl3d said, its always good but everyone has their weaknesses as well.  I am horrible at flying jets or helos.  But I can kick some ass as a gunner in the helo if I have a good pilot that knows how to line up TV shots.  I also feel that infantry is my strongest point.  Any class I feel I can play well with.

all around players are better.. nothing is sadder than someone who is only good in jet or chopper lose their jet/chopper base and be crying for an hour cause they cant fight on the ground worth a damn

A balanced squad running from flag to flag is how you win this game.  Medics are probably the most valuable, then supply.  For soloing, snipers or spec ops are the way to go.  I've found myself climbing on top of a building with a PKM and wondering wtf i'm doing!  I only take roof tops to snipe or spot or to clear it..in a sniper kit.

I believe the ideal squad would be 2 medics, 2 support, and 2 assaults.  But then, I only play IO.  With vehicles, an ideal squad will have to have anti tank and possibly engineers.

They're all important.

I'd like to see your squad of 6 differant kits take down me and my partner gunning.Well maybe after we kill you 10 times.

I'd rather have a team of 10 who each do something different very well than 10 average guys decent at everything.

What Jord says is true. I am a specialist to. I rather have specialists on my side than all-rounders.

Somebody who invests a lot of time flying a plane will allways have the edge on somebody who does it once in awhile. Same goes for my own specialization; sniping. I put in a lot of hours in that field and it pays of. I win most one on one stalking wars against allmost any other sniper I have met.

Adding to what has been said before.. When you're alone, it's better to be versatile. But when you have people willing to work together, that's where the specialists come in.

I prefer specialists. It allows them to realize their purpose and be more effective over a long battle than somone who is mildly competent at alot of kits. My scores while I play only sniper and when I bounce arround between Assault and Medic are completley different.

I would vote an all around team oriented player. I'll admit on jet maps I will play jet the entire round and usually get top 3. I do this because I control the air as well as ground vehicles, which helps my team much better than letting a less skilled pilot into the sky who will just let us get dominated by the enemy pilots. < run on sentence. I still think versatility is best.

All-around definately. Let's face it, your chance of running into 10 specialists of different trades and actually working together is going to be rare. If you're wellrounded in the game, then you can go as whatever kit your team needs. Which in turn, is how your team will win the round.

I play with my friends at a lan shop every sunday and i always insisted teamwork to be played around. Somehow a convoy of amour or a team of 5 players with specific kits can generate a massive amount of fun and laughter not excluding anguish at times. In my opinion, if u are good in one trade, try to learn the other trades. In my case, all my friends are jack-of-all-trades; thus its fun and adaptive in all situation. Being good in jets or helis cant promote teamwork. Maybe it does, but to only a small scale. I have seen many games where someone is so so damn good in a heli, getting scores like 60 - 1 yet lose the game badly cause he does not help to win. But of coz, u guys decide

I don't get the connection between -specializing/losing a round- or -jack of all trades/winning a round-.

Somebody who specializes isn't necessarily weak in other kits/vehicles. A specialist just excels at that specific kit/vehicle because it is more inline with his style of play or something. He has an edge in the game over other people when he uses his specialization. So his team will be the stronger for it. Imo a team with specialists will allways take down an all-round team.

As long as the specialist are specialist in different/complimentary areas.

a well balanced soldier is like a well balanced diet!

/and i agree i have ran into so many awesome pilots who can shoot you from 600m with a fulcan cannon, but once they bail out after a not so often mishap and hit the ground, either they are lazy and waiting to die because they dont want a sucide or they just plain dont know ground tactics

That depends on so many things but bottom line is people should play to their strengths most of the time.

If you're a good specialist then why not stick to it, rather than being so-so at a number of other things? If you can kick ass in lots of ways then you'd very likely switch roles during a fight anyway, as the situation demands, and more power to you.

I say a player thats fairly good at everything is better. Whats the point of being good at one thing, take that player off his specialty and he's just a nub. It doesn't matter if one position is taken, a versitile player can do other things. Besides, theres more to Bf2 than Support whoring 24/7 Karkand

Angelo, What happens if another player is better at something than the guy who specializes in it. The better player takes it and the specialist has to go do something he's not good at.

Then the other guy is just better.

Well sometimes, but aren't you talking about a situation where once a position is taken it's taken? There's plenty of room on most teams, and most maps, for two good snipers, medics, support players or whatever, even pilots or armour commanders in some cases.

Versatility is great and my preference, obviously looking at my stats I usually play infantry and am pretty good at anything but spec ops that I don't do too much, and can fly anything and tanking isn't that hard. I have alot of respect for some specialists though, like BigmacK. There's a difference between specialists and whores though, and don't have much respect for medic whores or plane whores.

I'd say one player who can ADAPT to any situation is better then a player that do one thing. So many times I've seen people fighting over a jet rather then capping some flags.

I would say that i am a good player that can play more than one kit and that has a good balance between teamwork and combat. Personally i prefer I/O so im not that good in jet or heli....

I just finished to play my round... check it out `
