Do you think it's helpful?

Will just eating a basic balanced diet (not taking into regard special foods that have all these fancy-nutritional values) and exercising enough be just as good as taking special foods and the like?

If possible back your claims with some sources, because I'm really getting sick of this marketing bullshit and whether or not it really is, bullshit.

And please do not just say you think it's bullshit too.

Sawasdee, beano! I had a serious cholesterol problem two years ago. My total cholesterol was 252 and the doctor said I wouldn't make it to my 50th birthday. By just cutting out trans fats, cutting down on saturated fats and adding omega-3's, I lost 20 lbs (~9kg) and dropped my cholesterol to 191. Apparently, I have a genetic predisposition to this problem though.

Anyway, I had a long conversation with my doctor and have done a lot of research on this subject. As far as I can tell, the best answer to your question is "Maybe". Everyone's physiological makeup is a little different so different things work for them. For most people, a balanced diet and exercise will be enough to get them to the retirement home. For others, like me, it takes a little more.

Btw, I'll be on a plane to Bangkok in less than 12 hours.

omg rly? will you have a phone or anything? staying where?

and back on topic;

also, would it make sense to eat a food with 'healthier' fats in addition to your normal diet? Or is fat just fat, and so whatever fat that came with what you ate is enough?

Crap, can't remember the name of the hotel... I'll go look it up in a minute. Won't have a phone unfortunately cuz we'll only be there one day. My wife wants to go to chatuchat (or something like that) for shopping, then we're off to Phuket. I really wanted to go see some Muay Thai, but there won't be time.

So yeah, adding the good fats (unsaturated/omega 3) will make you healthier. They actually clean some of the buildup in your arteries that the bad fats leave behind. Eating the bad fats here and there isn't that big of a deal most of the time. I recently read that coconut milk has a lot of omega 3, so I went and celebrated with a huge ass plate of panang curry at the local Thai restaurant. Mmmmm......

I think it's bullshit too.

EDIT: Sorry I couldn't resist.

I dunno, but alot of people make alot of claims about this sort of thing. Some of it is backed up by 'scientific' data (most of which is funded by the people that make the shit), and some of it is just some guy in a fancy suit trying to sell more of something. Alot of studies of the nutritional and health effect of different foods are contradicted by other studies down the track. One thing that's pretty much uncontested is that if you eat junk food almost exclusively you will die earlier.

MM one day eh.

Well chatuchak is overrated, it's a huge-ass market full of everything, but you can find the same stuff inside the city. Chatuchak is outside the city, quite far but it's massive, not necessarily better though; 200 shops selling watches is not that different from 10 shops. I suggest just going around Silom or Sukhumvit sois 3-20-ish. If you're in downtown BKK friday night grab a phone and call me; 0897613829 and I might be around.

Pukhet is good too, the whole place has stuff like chatuchak.
