Which I'm sure is a more widely listened genre than south london ambient drone.

You're doing your usual "deliberately misconstrue what other people are saying to get a rise" shtick.

It's quite tedious.

What has been misconstrued? I made no claims about Shakira, I happen to be listening to her at present, that is all.

shakira last.fm: 1.7 million listeners
aphex twin last.fm: 1.1 million listeners

'latin' music tag (of which shakira is one of the most commonly tagged artists) last.fm: used 150,000 times
(or 'spanish' if you prefer that variation - 90,000 times)
'ambient' music tag (of which aphex twin is one of the most commonly tagged artists) last.fm: used 906,000 times

and you're not "misconstruing" things, you say? "south london ambient drone?" aphex twin is from cornwall. he's also one of the most popular and widely acknowledged electronic artists of the last 20 years. you are purposefully trying to construe that a) he is not influential (which he plainly is); and b) that he is some marginal, uzique-underground-hipster-crap 'south london drone ambient' artist. this is not only you misconstruing things like an idiot, but also you betraying just how blatantly foolish you are, and how little you know about this subject. just quit whilst you're ahead. throw in the towel for once, instead of aggravating the same little wound over and over.

sorry but the melodies in this are just fucking wow. the guy is one of the only producers i can think of who has taken a classical-style reverence for melody/harmony and brought it into the modern age with electronic equipment. 100 years ago this guy still would have been an acclaimed composer. he is just so good at writing a musically-sound track, even before all the electronic sampling and synthesis comes in.

shakira has never done anything as creative as that in her life.

lol Uzique just admit your taste in music sucks. I'd rather listen to rich Latin music from Shakira than the ambient drone crap that comes out of Aphex Twin's studio.

Id say Shakira has been more influential than Aphex Twin. just because his drone crap has been around for decades doesn't mean it's good. You've tricked yourself into thinking its good since its "different and unique", typical unwarranted self importance.

"drone" crap? he's only done one album of drone-like material. try again.

Name one thing Aphex Twin has done to influence the electronic music genre as immensely as you claim. Aphex Twin is overrated, I respect him as an artist but dickriders like you piss me off. He's not that great.

how am i a dick-rider? aphex twin pretty much pioneered the 'warp' sound that characterized everything in the mid 90's and early 00's. but do you know much about the history of electronic music? how the genres developed? the hardcore continuum? no, i don't think so. so why am i going to type 3 paragraphs of justification to a guy that gleaned his knowledge about aphex twin from youtube comments? go read a fucking book.

and jay that's nice and all, but many people are bored by 3-chord drunken irish pub rock, too. doesn't stop you posting 4 tracks a day because of their lyrical-teen-angst 'relevance' to you.

I think if Aphex Twin read this thread he'd call you a dick rider for over hyping his music like it was the second coming of Ludwig Van Beethoven. Enjoy your one dimentional drone shit while I listen to electronic artists who actually put meaning ful layers and sounds into their production. I could produce an Aphex Twin track right now, that's how one dimensional his stuff is.

There was a period in my life where I liked Industrial a lot, and I can listen to it in the background and be fine, but I never got into Drum & Bass or Jungle or Trance or any of that stuff. I need lyrics and music that isn't just samples of other peoples work

well that's great, considering most electronic music isn't made of samples of other people's work.

not that the technique of sampling somehow illegitimates the music and makes it 'lesser'. sampling is a core part of hip-hop's aesthetic, and nobody is saying j dilla lacks talent, because he didn't hit every snare rim-shot and hi-hat himself.

what exactly is 'nauseous drone'? one album out of a dozen? 20 years old? that sure defines two decades of musical output!

except i never said anyone's music is shit. just rightfully explaining to some musically illiterate people why aphex twin is recognized as a 'canonical' producer in electronic music. people who clearly have no knowledge of recent electronic music for some reason challenging my statement about a classic album (widely acknowledged) being a classic album. well done.

also jay you aren't acknowledging that most electronic music isn't sampled. which your (supposed) 'wise-crack' wrongly inferred. another person ready to criticize with no knowledge? isn't bf2s a little beacon of intellectual rigour.
