Ok i know some admins dont know this trick here so i'm gonna lay it out for you the best I can and hopefully it will do some good.
This here lame wannabe hacker that keeps polluting these forums with his definative guides to hiding like a pussy on wake island? You guys cant seem to get rid of this guy. His trick to circumventing your bans can be one of three things. #1 he has a dynamic ip address. This is common with dialup & dsl users. #2 is that he uses a proxy server. not much you can do here except for digging out all the proxy ip lists you can find off of hacker sites or wherever you can manage to find them and add them to your forum ban list. #3 is that he is a cable customer with a static ip address. all he does is simply resets his modem to get a new ip from his service provider. Typically in this situation the dhcp server only deals with a small amount of ip addresses in a given town if its small or, one side of town for a large city, not the entire state or network itself. With that said, this may or may not apply to users like aol where their ip changes every time they change a web page. I think this does apply to dsl too, i'm not sure, i dont study networks that hard.
Anyway to cut to the chase here grab this nifty little tool called neo ip tracer. This tool gives a graphical traceroute and shows all the servers this ip has to go through to get to you. It stops at the last major server that this user connects with near where he lives, such as some server in his nearby city. Ok once you run the trace with neo ip tracer there is a panel you click on and it shows you the ip range for that particular area that this user lives in. Lets say that his ISP is comcast and their full network range is 65.32.0.0 - 68.58.255.255 (numbers are not exact, this is just an example) and say this idiot lives in the small town of dayton, ohio. The local server there contains a range of 66.44.44.44 - 67.255.255.255. Wheather this user has dsl or cable his ip can be somewhere within this range, thats a shitload of combonations. So all you do is grab the general range for the location at which his ip traces back to and enter it into the ban list as a range like i just showed in the example. I dont know if phpbb accepts a range entry like that but i know invision powerboard does. I assume phpbb does too. Now with invision i know you can use wildcard combonations with your IP entries to ban anything that starts with 66.44 or something. Again, this is for you guys, whoever is in charge of banning users here to figure out how to make this work. I'm not familiar with the phpbb admin panel.
Now, the only problem with this is you risk banning innocent users. I had a scenario once when I was an admin at a forum, this kid lived in california. I needed to ban this kid from our forum. he evaded the bans so i did this very trick right here and i banned him, he was suprised he couldnt get on anymore. Well, once i did that it turns out his friend that lives next door got banned too. He was another forum user, so, i had to unban the range so his innocent next door neighbor could get on. When you enter a range like this you generally ban users from just that town or that side of town though. Anyway thats something to think about if you do this, but anyway you solve the problem. If anyone has any problems with this they will find a way to get back onto this site and let you know of the problem im sure.
Anyway there you go, I hope this is useful information to someone here.
