"The Pentagon has decided to extend the combat tour of 3,200 soldiers from a 10th Mountain Division brigade in Afghanistan for four months in hopes of quelling the violence."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070124/ap_ … fghanistan

In the military, any military, your job is to fight and protect your country.  Why is being "extended" such a bad thing according to the media?  To be honest, your job is on the battlefield, not at home.

I think it's more a matter of how soldiers would like to periodically see their families.  As long as they get to do that, I don't have a problem with extensions, but again, I'm not a soldier....    My question is...  have you had your service extended before?  If so, how did you feel about it?

Unfortunately it is a bad thing in the sense we would like to see more progress from the nations we are there to support.

four months that you could possibly die in the ME or you could get home, step off a curb and get hit by a bus. Dead is dead, dont matter how it happens, only matters that you enjoy what you do. And if you dont enjoy it, it matters that you do what you signed up for, both us civilians and those in the military, imo.

I know when I was in the Army being in the field sucked without people shooting at you.  If the US would give them some bar time every few weeks to blow off steam I'm sure they would be happy and content with the extention.

I think some of the problems stem from the fact that before 9/11, being in the military was largely a way for people who came from schools like me to half-ass high school and still get into college with the same benefits that people like me, who worked my ass off for the scholarships and grades that I have. Then, 9/11 comes along, and suddenly the military isn't so great a job anymore, cause now you actually stand a decent chance of getting your ass killed. I know for a fact that from my school for a long time there were complete losers signing up for the military just to reap all the benefits that it offers and get a job much better than they could have gotten with their high school effort. These are the kind of people the military is fielding, its not like the commercials were you see rich suburban kids talking to their parents like their gonna actually have a problem affording college. It's people who come from where I came from, who lived in poverty their entire life and since they screwed around in high school, all they had left was the military. And now, suddenly they realize that they can actually get killed. These people (I'm not saying everyone, but the people I'm describing, and granted boot camp probably reforms some of them) don't care about America and what they are doing over there. They just wanted free shit from the government, like they've gotten their entire lives, stupid kids who didn't realize that the reason they get all this nice stuff is cause they could actually die.

In my history class, there was a discussion on this topic. It's amazing how naive some people are to realize that we don't have an infinite amount of manpower to relieve the troops from their combat tour.

Ok, you went to High School, be extended in that! being extended in a combat zone sucks ass, try being on edge 24/7, its not fun, the Army does 12mo combat tours and the Marines do 7mo, thats long enough.

Granted, I'm talking about the content of character of the people that join the military in today's day and age however, and my observations having spent a good 6 years now as a prime target for recruiters.

The argument I may have is with that is the fact that recruitment levels meet an exceed requirements still today. Even after 5 years of war. I think for the most part the soldiers know exactly what they are getting into. When they are given a plan that is workable they perform well. The military can not force a government to stand up and take control. They can only provide opportunity. The policy may be ineffective, but if you remember how fast we toppled Afghanistan and Iraq you can see that these kids that join are not the slackers I think you are painting them to be.

Being shot at and kept from your family is bad.  Being shot at and kept from your family for even longer is even worse.  Yes they signed up for it and knew the risks, that doesn't mean its not bad.

Extending tours of duty results in far greater phychological impacts for the soldiers involved according to the US military, hence why they don't do it most of the time. Much better to have more soldiers and to cycle tours with extended recupiration periods back home with the family.

The reason it is a 'bad thing' is because it quite clearly demonstrates the fact that the US military is overstretched.

I happened to me but it was only for six months and I was active duty anyways. I was pretty pissed because we were underway and I wanted to come home and get laid. You never, ever, under any circumstance toch a chick sailor. No no no no. They have had more dick in them than a sign-in-log at a Richard convention.
