AppleInsider wrote:

The centerpiece of ATI's next-generation graphics card line may make its first appearance as part of an upgrade to Apple Inc.'s Mac Pro line of professional desktop computers, according to an online report.

Revealed in a photo published by the The Inquirer on Monday, a version of the card -- codenamed R600XTX -- was initially pegged as an OEM model for large system manufacturers. However, a subsequent report from the publication claims the specialized card was designed specifically for one customer: Apple.

The mammoth red beast, measuring some 12.4-inch in length, is about 3-inches larger than the industry-leading GeForce 8800 card from NVIDIA. It's said to include a four-pronged heat pipe with vapour chamber technology to provide amble but quiet cooling.

When it makes its debut as part of the ATI X2800XT series later this March, it's rumored that the card will feature 1GB of 512Mbit GDDR4 memory running at 2.0GHz. The graphics core itself will reportedly be an 80nm chip clocked at 800MHz -- significantly faster than the GeForce 8800's 1.8GHz memory and 575MHz core.

While there appear to be several versions of the ATI card that will slowly make their way to market -- including a 9-inch retail variant and slightly down-clocked dual-chip offering -- the model destine for Apple is expected to debut first and introduce CrossFire support to the Mac.

CrossFire technology, which requires a compliant motherboard with a pair of PCI Express (PCIe) graphics cards, essentially allows users or system manufacturers to pair graphics cards within a single system to improve graphics performance.

Precise release date and pricing specifications are currently unknown. However, the card is likely to cost Apple significantly less than the dual-chip X2800XT2 solution, which The Inquirer has pinned at around $600.

Apple, which has held a brawny update to its Mac Pro workstations within its labs since last fall, has reportedly deferred on a release until a time closer to a roll-out of Adobe's Intel-native Creative Suite 3.0 software bundle.

The 8-core Xeon-based powerhouse would be the only system within the Mac maker's arsenal capable of adopting the new ATI card.

Dude, you need to come out from under your rock more often.  We beat this information to death, and have since found out about an additional delay.

Power requirements are just getting ridiculous.  Anyone experience dimming lights yet when they power up their gaming rig?  External graphics cards with external power supplies are in the pipe already.

The R600 based cards were expected to be announced at CeBit at the end of March, and shipments available in April.  As of yesterday it has been found out that the release date is being pushed back a bit further.

But to answer your initial question, this is the same picture and article that was posted some time ago.  This monster version is for SiS and OEM, which would include Mac.  I've not seen anything to confirm that this card was only for Apple.

This was the news as of yesterday.

February 21, 2007 - TechPowerUp brings news that ATI (erm, AMD now) will not be launching its R600 line-up next month after all. More from ATI/AMD:

"To better align our strategy with current market opportunities, we've changed the launch plan for R600. We are going to deliver a competitive configuration to market with an extremely attractive combination of performance, features and pricing, targeting a broader market segment in Q2. With the revised strategy, AMD will be better able to capitalize on the broad appeal of 3D graphics and DirectX 10, being driven in part by the growing popularity of Windows Vista™."

On the release of a new macpro, is it expected that they release a new macbook as well?

Here's the thing.  Are there any games on the Mac that can truly push the limits of this card?  24"-plus LCD graphic designers yes.  But is that a larger segment than the Microsoft gaming community?

And I would have said yes, until the announcement as of yesterday that AMD has further delayed the part which was scheduled to be announced at the end of March with product available in April.

Again, as of yesterday.

I just got off the phone with ATI who informed me that the Editor's Day which was scheduled around March 11 (flights and hotels were already booked) has been postponed to the second quarter of 2007.
The reason is that their R600 Series is not where they want it to be yet, so they decided to move the launch to be able to deliver a competitive product. Also I am hearing that at the Q2 launch we will see more than just GPU related stuff, so I would guess Physics or GPGPU computing.

"To better align our strategy with current market opportunities, we've changed the launch plan for R600. "This was a tough decision to make for us, but a necessary one that will ultimately result in bringing a better product to market."

Looks like CeBIT won't be so interesting at all.

Actually, my point is that, why Mac first?    There should be more demand on the PC side for this monster.  My guess for the PC delay is the DX10 issue.

Interesting tidbit is that Retail version will be smaller than the OEM version.

Fortunately for the PC guys, this card will only like 9.5" (~24cm) in the retail version.  The SiS and OEMs get the "John Holmes" version.

They've been done. Asus released a GPU (might have been a 7950GX2, I can't remember) with an external power lead (and no I'm not talking about the external GPU enclosure for laptops).
