A rather silly report commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry talked about giving robots "human" rights - including the right to vote, to receive income support, the provision of council housing and even robot healthcare.

The idea that your vacuum cleaner might be able to sue you for not giving it a lunch break is the kind of lunatic thinking that gives boffinry a bad name.

No wonder proper scientists have queued up this week to condemn the report as "shallow" and "poorly informed

What robots?
I own NOTHING that is autonomously computer-controlled. A robot lawnmower would make it all of 5 inches before running into what it would define as 'flowerbed'. A robot vacuum would be driven into walls by the cat.

I'm more worried about my cat deciding he doesen't need me alive any more. A robot can bump into your ankles, and that's pretty much it. The cat has sharp claws and teeth, and sleeps on my bed at night.

EDIT:
Little bugger can hear my typing the world 'cat'. He just shifted to get my attention and look deceptively cute and fluffy.

scientists are probably stupid enough to give vacuum cleaners emotions and thoughts. if those assholes can do it, they will.

I sell those at work. The vacuum ones are pretty good but the mopping one is horrid. I always get those returned against me. My commission took a hit from those. Thats why I let my other people I work with sell those. I have no luck with mopping ones, those are leaky bastards.

It could be argued that intelligence requires sentience. Otherwise you're just following orders, and even an American can do that .

Seriously, though, simply following instructions is exactly what current programs do.

Have said that, having morals doesn't indicate sentience/intelligence, as many (read: most) world leaders demonstrate this aptly, nor is a concept of sacrifice (yes, and intelligent/sentient being almost certainly would but............wtf? what kind of criteria is that?).

Well, it's nice to see that the daily mail isn't running out of ideas about what stupid stories to invent to scare stupid people. "Oh no the robots are attacking us and leeching off the state. It wasn't like this in my day where everything was in some completely ficticious 1950s utopia where we could all be racist and xenophobic and everyone wouldn't complain because that was normal." Fucking Daily Mail. Why the hell not think about what rights a self aware robot could have? The government wastes money on far dumber stuff than this, at least this has some thoughts about addressing a potential future issue rather than waiting till it's upon us and then deciding.
