I'm currently a medical student training to one day beceom a doctor. I've been trained to use a defibrillator (shock paddles) but was told (in the UK atleast) we no longer use the paddles you see in films/TV/BF2, instead we are trained with machines with wires attached to what look like big elastoplasts. No where near as cool as having 2 hand held paddles. Was jsut wondering if anyone from anywhere else had any experience with BF2 like shock paddles

Actually, most civilian medical facilities make use of the electroids you have been trained on.

TV/Movies (and apparently games) make use of the shock paddles more for "visual effect"

I can't speak for the world ... but most well equiped paramedics carry them with them.  The only place i would think that the shock paddles see use is perhaps in military medics.

In the military i would expect they use paddles as theres no telling how many people or times they're going to use the defrib... thats just guessin tho. either way, as long as theres a zzzzap

Yes, I work at a hospital in Florida. We do indeed have shock paddles. As you know in that picture, that's mostly used for mobile use.

Oh ok, because in the UK we use those sorts of defibs on resus trolleys now too, as well as with paramedic teams. Interesting.....I wish we still used paddle, can't rub the stickers together and don't get to shout clear as much

yeah, its like the cell phone, you cant slam the phone down in anger anymore, at least without breaking the phone, and a SLAP aint as good as a SLAM.

Wife works at airport...you can imagine, why they need those there. I work at Area 51, jk, defense systems, I guess in case I get typing cramps.

Will Defibs actually STOP a heart like in the game??

Lol they have the potential to yes. What a defibrillator is, is a machine which passes an electrical impulse between to points (the paddles) when these points are placed either side of the heart. When someone's heart is fibrillating (vibrating rather than steadily and rhythmically beating) the electrical potential jerks it back into its original rhythm. If someone's heart isn't in fibrillation and you defibrillate it, this causes the heart to contract when its not meant to and causes cardiac arrest. hope that clears a few things up

Well, being a paramedic in a bad neighborhood, They do have paddles still out there but not many any more.  When you shock someone you actually stop their heart and cause it to reset itself, hopefully, if it doesn't then more than likely it goes asystole, flat line.  BTW if someone is shot in the heart chest, they are dead. No shocking in the world will bring them back.  If you shock a healthy heart chances are it will still work. Though it will take years off of you.  If you have a pt with a traumatic arrest you have about a 1% chance of bringing them back.

Hehe, I just wish the game was like in real life. If you get shocked you fly like 5 feet back.

I love the part where your caracter says: your alive buddy, now get back in the fight! Getting shot several times in the head and chest and... zapp.... you're back.

I used to be a medic in the dutch army, trained for bullet- and knifewounds especially and everytime i hear that line, it makes me smile.

Btw the part where the medic says: Clear! is rather silly cause you cant kill a friendly with paddles. It only disrupts team communications on large servers.

@markymark, can you tell me if shockpaddles work through clothing?

Edit: I forgot to say, great topic!

I would guess that the defib used in BF2 woudl be used for military use, because it looks like the battery supply would last longer, and it appears to be much more durable then the AED's I've been trained on.

Hehehe so true about the You'll live buddy, now get in the fight! hehehe i laugh every time. If i'd been shot and defibrillated back to the living, theres no way I'd wanna get back in the fight! lol

And with regards to the clothing....I'm not enitirely sure, but I've always been trained to remove clothing, with aid of scissors or just hands, and in perfect world try make sure the person does not have any nipple piercing or other metal appendages. But coming to think of it, were also told that if at all possible try to apply contacts to hairless skin, so I imagine the more material between the paddles and the person the more resistance. Also the paddles I use monitor heart movement as well as suppling the "shock" and that is pretty much totally stopped with clothing in the way. =]  If anyone else has any light on this fact please enlighten us all

The defibrillator is called AED, means automatic external defibrillator (traslated from german, might be the right expression too).
You don't need medical skills for it, cause the thing eyplains all what has to be done and decides alone.
It's used at public areas like subways, airports or event halls/sport stadiums.

The defibrillator with the paddles is still used by medical trained personal,
such as paramedics (called "Rettungsdienst" in Germany) and hospitals.
It has up to a 12 pole ECG and much more functions like blood oxygen amount and blood pressure measure abilities.
There are also much more settings for the shocking, used by medicines to increase the chance of reviving the patient.

All clear?
It's just a game, and a nice idea, that reviving.

Lol, yeah the one pictured is the automated one, its slightly different to the one UK health professionals are trained with, but doctors, or "medicines" in the UK use ones practically identical to this. The only major difference is that some of the setting can be changed, and your not guided through step by step by a CG voice
