I know that's what it says, but if that was the case no one would have bothered inventing a PSU over about 150w till the 8800 came along. I think they may have labled it wrong or something. And based on what you're saying, you need a 1000w for 2x 2900XT, but only 350w for a high end rig with one of the same card in? Don't be ridiculous.
one GTX for high end rig -> 500w PSU
two GTXs for high end rig -> about 750w PSU
you need to have some extra power so the psu runs more cooler and at better efficiency

EDIT: and for karma-kills: Thermaltake Toughpower 850w has 4 pci-e power cables so it can easily handle 8800GTX SLi
Oh wait, I calculated that with GTS's. With a GTX I get about 800w.
remember that those wattage calculators put that extra 30% in it but 8800GTX SLi has worked well with 700w psu. I have seen it with my own eyes.

I like to play it safe. And remember, if you overclock the cards and your CPU it'll use more power.

Thanks for the continued input.

Realistically, what PSU will i need?

Im looking at SLI, Dual Core, 2 Optical drives and 3 HDDs as worst case scenario.

Looking at Corsair 620W:

and, Enermax Infiniti 720W:

If you're looking at SLi, you'll be wanting round about a 1000W PSU. A 8800 GTX consumes about 350W on it's own at load.
No, that's 350W total system usage, not the video card alone. Watts aren't that important, it's amps that you want. You could run a top-end system on 450 - 500W as long as you have enough amps.

I'd get a bigger hard drive than 150gig in there, 250gig at least (once you start using it you'll be kicking yourself for lack of space very quickly lol, specially if you're a serial downloader)

Sign up on the overclockers forum, and they'll spec you a much better build than anyone on here will. Get Crucial Ballistix RAM and a Corsair 620W PSU.

My recommendation:
