"President Bush empathized with Abraham Lincoln on Monday, saying they both stood by their principles in the face of criticism during wartime.

"The president took seniors and advocacy group leaders on a tour of the Oval Office after a meeting on Medicare's drug benefit. . . .

"Bush told the group there is great pressure in Washington to change principles for the sake of political popularity, but he said he would not.

"'It's a struggle for some. It's not for me,' he said.

"He showed the group a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. He said Lincoln was unpopular during the Civil War but maintained his belief that all men are created equal.

"'Look what would have happened to history' if Lincoln had abandoned that principle, Bush said."
Someone please explain to me how come this guy compares himself to none other than what many historians believe was the greatest of all U.S. presidents. President Lincoln's legacy is an inspiration for millions today.  He was known as honest Abe.  Is the man delusional?

"Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it." Abraham Lincoln.

I know he was Republican, so?  He solved the greatest crisis of the history of US, and he gave freedom to a lot of slaves.  He had great respect for civil rights, despite what he had to do during the Civil War.   You could say the US exists today as it is thanks to Lincoln.

Maybe they have similar political stances, but by likening himself to Lincoln, he invokes the idea of honesty and pure morality, which is complete and utter horse shit when it comes to our current president.

Lincoln fought a war against part of his own country, people bak then may have hated him for it but in hindsight, he saved the US.... Bush fought a war with another country that attacked us, people now hate h im for it, but some day down the road we will see that fighting them over there instead of on US soil, was better for us....

He was a republican but you need to realize that back then the republicans were the radical party, and the democrats were liberal (no conservatives existed in the US at that time as back then being conservative meant you favored absolute monarchy), it wasn't until the early twentieth century that the democrats were more liberal than the republicans.

I read it. It all makes sense if you know the definition of empathy. He didn’t compare himself to Lincoln. He brought to light that Lincoln faced a similar drop in popularity as the War dragged on. Yet he didn’t lose sight of his goals “ thank god “.

I read some where that they had no absentee or military balloting/voting system back then and Lincoln won his re-election by giving leave to Republican units “ only “ so only they could vote.

Back then Militias were raised town by town and most shared a political point of view.

Further he could easily draw many parallels between himself and Lincoln if that was his desire.

Didn’t Clinton say he was like”  Thomas Jefferson “. If you read a little about Thomas Jefferson it seems pretty accurate also

Do people not actually research what has happened in the past?  Lincoln was not the greatest President of all time.  He did not free the slaves for the sake of freeing the slaves, it was a political move designed to punish the south and take away the last bit of Labor the Confederacy had.  He might have been honest, but he was royally disliked in Washington, D.C.  One of the most famous addresses by a President was by President Lincoln and the only reason why was because it was too short to paraphrase.  He was invited to a "rally" only because he was President and was the follow up speaker of the event and no one really expected him to say anything at all. You might know it as the The Gettysburg Address.

And yes I am biased against Lincoln because I think the terms he and the rest of Washington used on the South were far too harsh and completely destroyed life.  Education is still horrible in the South due to reconstruction failures, the lack of economy, and the Union troops pulling out early.  Freedmen (blacks) were persecuted again, but this time they were lynched and killed because they weren't someone's property and therefore there was no law or penatly against killing them in the South.

The difference is Clinton was a pretty good president IMO and GWB is being disrespectful to Lincoln when he is implying that history will judge him as good as Lincoln.  Read between the lines.

You blame Lincoln for the education system in the South, after 140 years?  Lol.  And blame the racists for the lynchings and killings not Lincoln.

You'd like it if I actually said that, wouldn't you. But no. See the underlined. Bush is not the root of all US behavior.

Lincoln was dead before Radical Reconstruction began, and he wouldn't have supported it anyway.

How could republicans have been called Wigs if they didn't exist?
