The point is this: the military is a government institution. A business has the freedom to operate in whatever manner the market will bear, but the military should be designed to benefit both the public AND its employees. We shouldn't have high officials raking it in while soldiers live in disease-infected tents.
If we can afford to pay 10 times as much on each mercenary contractor as we do on each soldier, then something tells me we aren't directing funds the way we should be.
