Damn straight it is...  but that's not why we see things like that -- it's because we spend way too much on bureaucracy and not enough on our soldiers.  When you look at the absurdly high salaries of the upper echelon of the military, it becomes quite apparent that money isn't the issue.  It's the distribution of funds.
But the same goes for every business does it not?
Well yeah...  I think the American corporate business model is highly classist, but that's another discussion altogether.

The point is this: the military is a government institution.  A business has the freedom to operate in whatever manner the market will bear, but the military should be designed to benefit both the public AND its employees.  We shouldn't have high officials raking it in while soldiers live in disease-infected tents.

If we can afford to pay 10 times as much on each mercenary contractor as we do on each soldier, then something tells me we aren't directing funds the way we should be.

It's not the salaries that kill us in government spending, it's the expansion of the role of government on the whole. This is something conservatives strongly oppose. Let's face it, when Bush told us he was a "compassionate conservative" he was feeding us a pile of shit. Ever since he took office he has been expanding and spending recklessly. No child left behind? gtfo

I know.  But ask anyone who served under both tools at what time did they have the best pay and equipment.

Before Iraq.

We spend in horribly impractical and inefficient ways. For instance the F-22 raptor. The troops on the ground now (and in the foreseeable future) need air support in numbers. The F-22 raptor is the most expensive fighter in history without a mission. (Not a single air force fighter pilot has died in Iraq).

Davis, a taut, no-nonsense Marine, looked me in the eye and said, “They may be old, but they're good. That's no excuse.”

I got more pay collecting unemployment for the 6 months after i got out of active duty than I did deployed collecting haz duty, tax free, over seas and all that other shit.  I was making about 1500 as a PFC with 4 years service

Times change my man. We should be planning and purchasing according to the most likely threats. For every F-22 that will be sitting idly in a hanger a ton of troops go without the best amor possible. The F-22 Raptor is an unnecessary air superiority fighter. We are buying Ferrari's when we need minivans.

yeah, it used to be a year in california but they changed it right before I became unemployed.  I was frugal with my money.  made up for a lot of time i wasnt getting paid my last few months i was in.  finance screwed up my ets date and I ended up not getting paid for the last three month in texas

Wasn't this the military that came up with the thousand dollar toliet seat for a submarine? (or was that NASA - or both?)

I look forward to seeing Bush's retirement plan.

I can't foresee him following in Carter's footsteps of international mediator. Whatever your criticisms of Carter's presidency (and I don't know enough on that point to argue with you lot), he has done a good job in that regard since.

Bush seems likely to spend the rest of his days chewing tobacco on the ranch.

And I look forward to the George Bush Presidential Library - the greatest collection of weekend funnies in history I foretell .....

PS Forget the F-22, the F-35 will be more expensive. And my moronic government is buying about several billion dollars worth off the US. We are now wishing we were buying F-22s. Gaaahhh!!!!
