There are some good deals on AMD procs with their recent price drops... I just think that the duo core 6600
is the better choice... you can OC the 6600 easily... and you can also upgrade the intel proc in the fall when the more expensive chips drop quite a bit in price...  And yes... you can use your 200 gig hd... just format it and install XP... and any other moboard/peripheral drivers like normal...  If you have any issues putting it together pm me here or on my clans site... http://www.theunitedforce.com/
... or also at the BF2 editor website for BF2 mapping and modding... http://bfeditor.org/forums/

Okay, I've only got a few more questions.

I know you said that you think the Intel processor is the better choice, but I don't know how to OC.  So given that any processor I have will likely be factory tuned, is the 6600 still a better choice than the AMD?

Also, since I am going to be keeping my hard drive, will I need to buy Windows again?  It's already loaded on a small 3 gig hard drive that is used for nothing else in my comp (I'm pretty sure).  Or do I still have to buy another copy since it will be on a new rig?

Its up to you... but i think the duo core is the way to go from comps i have seen using them... Also you can upgrade the duo core when the prices drop in the fall and beyond...
If you mean that your OS is loaded on a partition that the manufacturer provided than no... i dont think so... it will be setup for your old moboard and peripheral devices...  You can get XP pro for about 150 bucks OEM...   And ocing isnt necessary just available... A lot of moboards will let you oc in the bios settings very easily...

why spend $150 on an OS that's being replaced by vista? home premium's $115.

OR get ultimate for $210.

granted vista eats your RAM, but its better than shellin out $150 thats gonna be replaced in a year or sooner.

EDIT: also you'll be having 2 gigs of RAM so you'll be fine in bf2 if you do use vista. im sure you can change all the extra crap they added into it like the idiotic 3d windows...think they were on drugs when they did some things on vista...

XP is gonna be supported till 2012... and i work with computers and Vista is a pain right now with drivers and software incompatibilty... Vista will be cool eventually...  but for now and for games... XP is my choice...  Its up to the comp builder guy... choose whichever you like...

Seen some posts in this thread claiming that you'll need vista if you get a dx10 card. This is not true, as the cards run fine on dx9. Stay away from vista until MS gets their OS worked out. There are no games that use dx10(well there is one, but it's shit), and from what I've seen from dx10 game previews like Crysis, there is hardly any noticeable change from dx9 to dx10.

I highly recommend getting an antec 900 case like catbox suggested. I built my first computer last month with this case and it keeps my computer at 21c under load. I just threw an 8800 gtx I got in yesterday and it only went up to 24c under load.

I had the same heating problems you have with my old computer. When I touched it, it was very warm all the time it felt like a mini heater beside me. Now that I have an antec 900 it's like a fridge beside me always cool. I sometimes have to put socks on it gets to cold

The only thing with that case is that is doesn't have a power supply with it.  How hard are those to install?...because I really don't have any idea with them.

EDIT: Look at this case.

It's $65, has a 500W PSU, 4 fans, and pretty good reviews.  Tell me what you think.

it isn't really hard to put in a psu. just put it in position & screw 4 screws in.

that case is good, but when you upgrade to a 8800 ur gonna need to get new psu since it's lower than 26A on that 12V.

I have almost completely redesigned this PC.  I went and talked to someone at a store (Altex) that sells many of the components I was going to buy and he gave me some recommendations and I though I'd cross-reference them with you guys.  Here is the new list of components I am looking at:

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115003
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813188019
Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130082
Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820227198
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811144125

I saw what Tdog said about the case and I wonder if anyone thinks this one is any better.  I'm not completely sure about the 8800 and if I don't get it, I'll most likely invest in a 7950 instead.  Would the case be able to handle either one of those cards, or would I be better off buying a case and PSU separately?

EDIT:  Fixed the links.
