  • Hard Drive not detected by one computer, but is by mine?

READ HERE FOR UNSPECIFIC SUMMARY TO SEE IF YOU MIGHT KNOW:

My friends computer would loop before it ran windows, restarting itself. So i tried using different plugs, that didnt work.  So I installed it into my computer and I can access the files so i know the HDD works.

Okay, so my friend dropped his computer off with me to avoid geek squad. Basically, I plugged it in. And the DELL screen came up, told the bios, loaded (Not sure how DELLS do it but mine lists what its booting and whats plugged in then starts.

Then, it black screens, and starts over again, basically I get about 4 seconds out of it before it re-starts itself.    So I cleared the CMOS. and Instead of restarting It gave me the option to do a "setup" witch is basically the basics on the computer, picking drives, saftey, power managment and all (I forget the name of this)   And I saved it thinking It set itself up (which is what it looked like listing everything)

So I restart. And same thing, So i went in to the Hard Drive, or where it should be and it lists it as " Not installed"         So I go and check it inside, all hooked up, and I think, maybe its a dead port?       Because theres one belt wire going from the mobo into the HDD, so I take the same exact type wire from the CD or DVD drive im not sure, and plug that in, and start it, still doesnt pick it up.

So I go into my computer, and free up a wire and grab a 4 pin molex. Plug it in, start it up. and I can now access all of the files on that HDD. And I can copy them but Id like it to work on that computer. Any ideas?

Thanks

Did you verify that the jumpers on the HDD are set to either Master or Cable select?

Your refering to BIOs. Try reseting the BIOs defaults on the system that's having issues detecting the HDD by pressing F9 in BIOs. If not try to see if you can get that system to recognize a different HDD. If it doesn't it's probably a bad port on the mobo.

My guess too.  Also, If you have the IDE cable hooked to the HDD AND a CD/DVD Rom drive, and its not set up right, it can fuck with your computer a bit.

And to clarify, you should probably have your HDD jumpers set to Master or Cable Select (There should be a little picture on the HDD to show the jumper placement).   The HDD should be on a different ribbon cable then your CD-ROM and if you trace it back to the motherboard should be plugged into to where it says IDE 0.  IDE 1 usually contains your CD-ROM.  Also, while you are tracing cables, be sure that the cable is fully seated into the motherboard.  I have several instances where I got pissed off at a HDD, CD-ROM, Floppy, etc, and come to find out that the other end of the cable had wiggled loose.

lol, you guys do not read huh? Well to clarify

I did reset the bios, and the HDD did have a direct line to the motherboard VIA one single IDE cable. The master/slave was headed up to the DVD ROM and CD ROM drives.

I removed the cable off of the DVD and CD drives, and put the master on the HDD, and tried that. Didnt work, it wasnt pre-rigged with the master/slave on the HDD and the CD drive. Totally different IDE cables

Don't ask for advice if you're just going to act like a know it all prick when people attempt to help you.

Touché. No more help for you.  When troubleshooting, it is best to start at the beginning, even if you feel that you have already done that.  You then progress from there to work out the problem.  I suggest you try a Google search and bother an alternate, tech-support oriented forum and see how far you get with your "you guys must be stupid" attitude.

Maybe if I say it twice you won't be a dick.

Also have you tried booting the OS on your friend's HDD? You mentioned you can copy them as the HDD is being recognized, but the OS could also just be corrupted, causing a boot loop.

In the BIOS; check both 'Boot Priority' and 'Hard Drive Configuration'.
Also, make sure it shows up in Windows Disk Management.

I cant even get into the boot priority when it sarts, it pulls me into that setup that ive never really seen before. no DEL for menu or F8 for boot options or anything...

and all you guys saying that im a "know it all prick" just cant take some joking around talk can you? If i was trying to be a know it all prick, I would say something more like "God damn you guys are fucking idiots, I JUST FUCKING SAID THAT. Well here this is what I said above, ------- okay? God damn now help"

did i?

no, I said "lol, you guys do not read huh? Well to clarify"

i made it more specific and answered your questions.

and to answer your question specifically (not with a jerky sense, just more dedicated to your question, man now im going to have to put my feelings in parenthesis so you guys dont take it the wrong way lol)

I have reset the BIOS, and to get to the menu to do so i reset the CMOS.

And before I try to boot off of my computer, if it was a corrupted OS, wouldnt it still come up in the hardware listing on the BIOS? I mean a corrupted OS cant really fuck with the Firmware detection can it?

No, you're right. A corrupted OS shouldn't change if the HDD is not being detected in BIOs. If you stick your HDD in his system though and it doesn't detect your HDD, it's probably a bad mobo port.

Ninja Edit: Actually it looks like you already tried plugging the HDD into the optical drive mobo port. Sorry I miss understood your OP. See if you can still get it to recognize your HDD, it's most likely an IDE controller failure on the mobo.

Thats a bitchin idea man... stick my IDE into her port (lol) and see if it runs

Ill try that tonite. thanks for the suggestion. karma
