Well, looks like the decisive blow in the format wars has just been dealt: Blockbuster Videos is backing Blu-Ray.

GG Microsoft, you gave it your all. But I think I gotta call this one for Sony.

I don't know, beta-tapes were backed by many video stores back in the day, and computer stores sold zip-discs for the 2 weeks those lasted.
I wouldn't call this one yet, it's still a tossup

It's not a forgone conclusion. Blu-Ray has the best chance of taking in the market, but who says either format will be adopted by the public? People may just not want a new format (as shown by early uptake figures).

I thought your point was fair enough (if a bit shallow) until I read your last sentence.

Oh, dear me. Microsoft were never a main backer of HD-DVD - they just liked to offer it more for the following reasons:

  • Sony helped develop and produce Blu-Ray
  • HD-DVD is cheaper
  • They really don't see the need for either format

It's Toshiba who's going to suffer mainly from this. Microsoft backed HD-DVD because it would be bad PR if they weren't seen to be going into the future.

Truthfully, the industry is merely scalping customers with these formats, and DVDs and Hard Disk Drives/the emergence of SSDs (Solid State Drives) will suffice until HVD becomes affordable.

All the best,

I "borrow" them from the internet
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

The decisive blow will come, as it did vor VHS vs. Video2000 from the pornography industry.

I hate how people compare the jump from DVD to Blue-ray to from VHS to DVD. The jump from DVD to Blu-ray isn't large, all Blue-ray has is more space, and don't give me any crap about how the Blue-ray has negligibly better picture quality.

I remember when DVD cam out its first players were ~400 USD, Blue-ray's players are ~600 USD, and inflation has not been nearly that much.

Also they spelled blue wrong.

Blu-ray has much more space and much higher quality picture. The jump from VCD to DVD is (slightly) smaller than the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray. The picture quality is way, way, way better and anyone who says otherwise has something very wrong with their eyes - it's like saying a game looks the same in 800x600 as it does in 1920x1200 (which are pretty close to the resolutions for DVD and Blu-Ray).

Both formats will succeed. It's not going to be another Betamax scenario.

HD DVD has a bigger backer than Blockbuster, THE PORN INDUSTRY. Blu-Ray will not distribute porn on its format. $56 billion and year, just from porn.

blockbuster is soon to be gone anyway. hell they are BARELY keeping their heads above water right now.....the only thing that is saving them is the on-line deal, but even that wont keep them going forever.
