Well, looks like the decisive blow in the format wars has just been dealt: Blockbuster Videos is backing Blu-Ray.

GG Microsoft, you gave it your all. But I think I gotta call this one for Sony.
It's not a forgone conclusion. Blu-Ray has the best chance of taking in the market, but who says either format will be adopted by the public? People may just not want a new format (as shown by early uptake figures).
I thought your point was fair enough (if a bit shallow) until I read your last sentence.

Oh, dear me. Microsoft were never a main backer of HD-DVD - they just liked to offer it more for the following reasons:
- Sony helped develop and produce Blu-Ray
- HD-DVD is cheaper
- They really don't see the need for either format
It's Toshiba who's going to suffer mainly from this. Microsoft backed HD-DVD because it would be bad PR if they weren't seen to be going into the future.
Truthfully, the industry is merely scalping customers with these formats, and DVDs and Hard Disk Drives/the emergence of SSDs (Solid State Drives) will suffice until
HVD becomes affordable.
All the best,
Andy
