There is a slight performance decrease in most of todays games as the drivers arent here atm. But in the future it should improve drastically.

I have vista home premium and latest nivdia 100.65 display drivers, however gaming on vista is for me a chore; alt-tab and the screen immediately turns to diagonal lines of varying green and blue. This also happens if i try to watch any movies at all. If anyone has any tips please advise. Other than that, vista is great for gaming, on my 7900gt and 2gb RAM the performance difference was a few 3dmarks and not noticeable at all. It will be vital for DX10 games.

But then again, so will DX10 video cards.

If you are buying a new pc u should definately get a DX10 capable video card, eg 8800 or 8600 when they are released. Otherwise there is no point buying vista

You should easily be OK, 2GB RAM will be a big help. Try to get semi decent good quality RAM.

and yes, they are too unless the games support DX9 as well, which is unlikely. Oh well, i am still going to lash out on a compatible card, even though they may be very pricey

I have got Vista Business edition with the following specs....

AMD 3500 (2.2 Ghz)
1024 mb RAM
6600GT 128mb
(80Gb HD)

On XP (home) i could play most medium, some high, no problems.

However, with Vista i have about half on low, half on medium.

Its an obvious drop, but with the new settings i get no lag or connection problems... just lower graphics quality.

However, with Vista been new, there is also the problems with not all programs been supported, even with the compatibility crap, however as the weeks go by these are gradually been fixed.

However, because you have 2Gb RAM, which is almost NEEDED for Vista, i am sure you will be fine

There won't be any exclusively DX10 games released for a good few years yet. All DX10 games schedueled for release anytime soon also incluse DX9 render paths and will be playable in XP using DX9c or in Vista using DX9L (or whatever new name they've come up with for it, might be DX9X or something). You will need DX10 hardware to get the most from these modern games, but it won't be essential to run them.

That said, if building a system in May then an 8600 Ultra would be the best way to go.

Vista still has some bugs, as any new OS would, but the Vista drivers are just too immature at the moment.  If you really play games on a regular basis, I would recommend just sticking with XP for now.  Give MS time to get a patch or two out, and NV/ATi time to massage the drivers a bit more.

I got a great computer, but probably won't install Vista till they fix all the blackouts and gaming issues.

I was wondering about that. What's the precedent for previous versions of DX? Was there overlap period of games that supported more than one version on DX when DX9 came out? If so, I'd imagine my DX9 card will be OK for a few years yet (fingers crossed). I've just ordered a new system with an x1950 card... But I also wonder if there are other aspects of Vista that will be utilised in new games which will make Vista the min reqirement...?

Search?

I posted a chart somewhere in there...

Pretty much, wait for DX10 drivers and support for Vista to come around, always gotta wait a few months before you switch to the newest operating systems if your a power user, XP had similar problems.

A post off AnandTech of the Half-Life 2 DX8/DX9 Performance/Quality Battle from Nov, 2004.

"When it comes to developing games, the biggest thing publishers look for are minimum system requirements.  The lower the minimum system requirements, the more games publishers can sell.  But the problem with really low minimum system requirements is that you end up with a game that doesn’t look too great on higher end hardware.  Valve has spent a great deal of time ensuring that multiple rendering paths were included with Half Life 2 to not only offer great performance on low end graphics cards, but also to offer spectacular image quality on high end GPUs.  The three codepaths that we will be looking at today are Valve’s DirectX 7, DirectX 8/8.1 and DirectX 9 paths in Half Life 2."

Sounds like a similar story with DX9/DX10? Upgrading is always a bumpy road, give it a few months and Vista will be better than XP, and that's when ill pirate it... arrr

i have Vista business 64Bit and i think the performance is terrible.....it takes me abuot 5-10minutes to load a map and then it laggs for about another 5minutes....
And i think this could be a RAM problem....or not!

MY system:

C2D E6600 @3Ghz
Asus P5N32 E SLI
2GB OCZ REAPER 1066
500GB Harddrive
GeForce EVGA 8800GTX
Watercooled!

3D mark 2006 result: about 13.000marks

And the driver problems are horrible you must download all your drivers becouse most are not supportet by 64Bit

I have ultimate 64 bit.  I haven't 'gamed' in months because it's so bad..

e6600
7900gt
4 GBs of ram..

the lag is ridiculous.. if you have XP and want to play games.. stick with it

I was thinking of getting an 8800 GTS sli card at some point, is this a good card, considering it is a DX10 card. I don't really have the money or want to spend the amount of money needed for a 8800 GTX.

I think that 2 GTS are more expensive than 1GTX.....but the performance will be better(not so much but better)...

2GTS=~760€
1GTX=~550€
1Ultra=~650€

Your system should load maps in seconds on max settings. Its about 85-90% Os and the rest Nvidia drivers. Consider this you basically upgrade your computer by downgrading to XP Os.
