RAM, Hard Drive, and Processors (Sometimes though, upgrading the processor and even the hard drive can void a warranty) are upgradable in most current notebooks. But for the most part, they aren't upgradable in terms of graphics. This can be seen when building a notebook from a barebone. The barebone almost always has no option to change the GPU because, it isn't quite upgradable. Doing so would usually mean a new motherboard or a different chassis, so even if you could, it would probably be too much of a hassle to try.

However, there are some newer notebooks like the C90 from Asus that have upgradable graphics cards. (Here and Here) It has the 8600m GT as of now, and people are speculating that once the 8700m and the 8800m are available, it can be upgraded to have those GPUs. But I wouldn't expect that upgrading the GPU would come cheap.

As for the second part of your post, I'm assuming you mean desktop replacement laptops, i.e. the big ones. Don't get me wrong, they are portable because you can still move them around without much hassle (Unplugging multiple wires, etc.). But they are quite heavy for most people to constantly move around, so it's not that the durability of the notebook is questionable, but rather its weight and size. That's why I probably wouldn't recommend a big, 17"+ notebook for college bound people unless I know that they wouldn't want to move it around too much.

Dell. Trust me, its a well good laptop. Inspiron 9400. Ofc you probs wanna try a different model that newer but I do recommend a dell. Their support is really good too, as long as you arent a technology tard.

The States version, E1705, was a really, really good deal. One could configure it with your specs under $1800 through Dell Coupons and such. It's a pity that they deleted the option for the 7900 Go GS, now its either GMA950 or the X1400 Mobility.

Branded yea, but in laptops we dont have a choice (maybe if we start gettin the option to build laptops the OEM's MIGHT cut prices, but I'd certainly go for this, infact I might myself   Quite like the Dell XPS 1710 actually to, but to bulky

The alien ware laptop on the main menu looks awsome but some of the hardware is out of date. Looks nice and it may perform well but i wouldnt want it. Probable only last 2hours per charge under intense gaming.

But probably not that much. I'd assume when doing very light work like, surfing the net, you'd get maybe 2.5 hours. Of course, you can always try and increase that time by lowering brightness, getting a hi-capacity battery,etc.
