RAM, Hard Drive, and Processors (Sometimes though, upgrading the processor and even the hard drive can void a warranty) are upgradable in most current notebooks. But for the most part, they aren't upgradable in terms of graphics. This can be seen when building a notebook from a barebone. The barebone almost always has no option to change the GPU because, it isn't quite upgradable. Doing so would usually mean a new motherboard or a different chassis, so even if you could, it would probably be too much of a hassle to try.Inspect@hDeck wrote:
Now, what about a laptops upgradeability? I will be able to upgrade it when it becomes outdated, right? Also, they say some of these things aren't that portable. Is this just because they are heavy/cumbersome? Or will they break apart after I move them a couple times?
However, there are some newer notebooks like the C90 from Asus that have upgradable graphics cards. (Here and Here) It has the 8600m GT as of now, and people are speculating that once the 8700m and the 8800m are available, it can be upgraded to have those GPUs. But I wouldn't expect that upgrading the GPU would come cheap.
As for the second part of your post, I'm assuming you mean desktop replacement laptops, i.e. the big ones. Don't get me wrong, they are portable because you can still move them around without much hassle (Unplugging multiple wires, etc.). But they are quite heavy for most people to constantly move around, so it's not that the durability of the notebook is questionable, but rather its weight and size. That's why I probably wouldn't recommend a big, 17"+ notebook for college bound people unless I know that they wouldn't want to move it around too much.

The States version, E1705, was a really, really good deal. One could configure it with your specs under $1800 through Dell Coupons and such. It's a pity that they deleted the option for the 7900 Go GS, now its either GMA950 or the X1400 Mobility.Vilham wrote:

The alien ware laptop on the main menu looks awsome but some of the hardware is out of date. Looks nice and it may perform well but i wouldnt want it. Probable only last 2hours per charge under intense gaming.Bell wrote:
And, for a serious gaming laptop, there big bulky things that have little battery life, defeats the purpose of a laptop imo. I still think, viable gaming laptops that still encorporate the versitility of a laptop, with the power of a desktop is some time away still. And, the fact that its something like a 40% price permium for the laptop brings it way out the realm of value for money. IF, I was going to buy one, I'd go for this

Branded yea, but in laptops we dont have a choice (maybe if we start gettin the option to build laptops the OEM's MIGHT cut prices, but I'd certainly go for this, infact I might myself Quite like the Dell XPS 1710 actually to, but to bulky

Even less. Just around 1 hour and 30 minutes.The#1Spot wrote:

Right, but when I'm not gaming, surely they last longer? Right?
yup
Most laptops are made by only a hand full of companies or ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) such as Clevo, Compal, Asus, Acer, Chemical Book, Quanta and MSI.
the Voodoo and Falcon notebooks (as well as a bunch of others) are just re-badged Clevos with fancy paint jobs.
Dell and Alienware get ALL their laptops from Quanta, Chembook and Asus they do not manufacture them themselves.
if you want to get the best price for EXACTLY the same hardware you should check out

Don't waste a lot of cash on a super wowie carrying bag and a paint job.... seriously

But probably not that much. I'd assume when doing very light work like, surfing the net, you'd get maybe 2.5 hours. Of course, you can always try and increase that time by lowering brightness, getting a hi-capacity battery,etc.Inspect@hDeck wrote:
