I am planning to do two main things to my rig within the near future:

Get a new Hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a … 6822152052
I have a pair of old IDE drives that I've dropped a few times and I hate the wide IDE cables so I'm upgrading. (BTW, SATA are faster and quieter and all-around better than IDE right?)

I'm also updating to Vista: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a … 6832116204
I might wait a bit to do this for more drivers and etc.

My question is this:
I really hate having to reinstall games that wont save my data (GTA: SA, Roller Coaster Tycoon, etc.) so whenever I've had to do anything, I just move everything onto one of my current drives (I have two crappy, old, IDE ones as stated before), and move them back when finished.

When I upgrade to Vista, can I move everything onto one drive, use my new one to install Vista, then put the old one in and move everything onto the new one?
Or will Vista give me a hassle because all the programs are from XP? (For example, will I need to format the old drive when I put it into vista and lose all my programs anyway?)

This is my hopeful plan:
1) Buy Vista and new drive.
2) Put everything except XP onto one current drive.
3) Install Vista onto new drive.
4) Put old drive with all programs into computer.
5) Move all programs from old (crappy) drive onto new drive.
6) Remove old drive, to just have new drive with Vista and all programs without having to reinstall all my games.

WILL THIS WORK?!?

Faster, Yes.
Quieter ?
Better, Yes

Ignore what everyone says about Vista been crap. Aslong as you have a reasonably up-to-date-system, it will run fine.

The game has to save it somewhere

I don't think this will work as well as you think- Windows is not just made up on file structures, its also made up of a complex registry (Start -> Run -> Regedit) which tell the OS where everything is.... It will prorbably be easier just to reinstall everything.

Moving Documents and folders are fine, but dragging across whole games and applications will probably not be.

What might work, is to save the folders of the games onto the one drive (like you said you would do)
Then install Vista on your SATA Drive
Then install GTA SA, Roller Coster etc etc. (This will create all the registry keys, install/ uninstall information)
Then drag the folders of the games, and overwrite the new game info, with your old stuff so that you have the same game files.

Although it would be a lot less hassel, and "safer", to find where the game saves the stuff.

EDIT- A quick search on google....

Q: Where do the files save to?
A: Virtually all of the files for RCT that you've created have been saved to: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\My Documents\RCT -or - Desktop -> My Documents -> RCT.
And it seems that the GTA SA save file in somewhere in the My Documents folder as well.

I don't recommend Vista just yet. I think that to many things don't work on it and it's just a pain in the ass.
Do whatever you want though.

WOW! I didn't even think of that. Thanks!
But will Vista detect the old drive with all the old programs when I put it into the comp? Will it be just like I was moving them from a different computer with Vista? Or will the fact that one is 32 bit and one is 64 bit make a difference?

Yes, Vista will detect the Hard Drive fine.

Just make sure the Hard Drive is set to "Master" on the back (Think its master?)

my advice is also not to 'upgrade' to vista.. i don't say 'not yet' i just say 'not'..
when vista came out, 8 guys of my class including me switched to vista and only 2 have not switched back to xp.

vista is a good work in progress but a terrible product

okay, another quick question:
What if I put all the programs onto the drive WITH XP? (Due to its size...)
Will having XP on a slave drive when I put it into Vista be okay?

before you buy vista use the search option here at this website and type "vista" in and you will see a hundred or so posts on its praise and mostly dislikes.  i can tell you now that if you plan of playing bf2 with vista better use the search button to find the punkbuster fixes and such.  a pain in the friggin butt.  i just helped a friend install bf2 on his new vista machine he bought at circuit city.  vista may run fine with certain apps, but not games yet.

Why are you guys making this so complicated?

Just install the new hardrive, install Vista, then slave the old drives onto the new one.  Your old hardrives will show up like shared drives.  Vista is very nice about this, I've done it with my home PC and it worked fine.
