I'm considering either the e6850 or the Q6600.  Both are chunky and both are the same price.

I am right now using a dinosaur of a PC.  Old 423 socket P4 1.7 GHZ with 1 gig of RDRAM that was bought back in 2000.  Old old old computer.  It's finally time to upgrade.

My plans are a 8800GTX (because the video card is usually my first upgrade after a few years), one of the two cpu's listed above, and 2 gigs of fast RAM (RAM has not been researched yet... so use your imagination).

My question is thus.  I usually use the same computer for years.  Heck this one is 7 years old and I'd still use it if the disc drives didn't give out (the mobo gave out, not the drives, but it's not an easy fix).  I'd like something a little future proof but not expensive.

So would a quad-core 2.4 GHz with 1066 MHz FSB be a little more future proof than a dual-core 3GHz with 1333 MHz FSB?  I need you all to chime in with your opinion.

If you were to get either the E6850 or the Q6600 and you had to keep them for 5-7 years, which would you choose?

i have a 6600 and an 8800 and it runs awesome.  i would go that route.

E6850 since you can overclock higher.

first thing first:  there is no such thing as future proof.  New stuff always come out.

Next year the 45nm cpus will be out.

anyways, go for the E6850.

E6850.

And, I'm no expert on this, but its my understanding that the quad cores are not really quads, yea there 4 cores, but its more a case of two duals glued together, soooo in that case I would just take the dual core

Same situation with the nVidia GeForce 7950GX2.

How about overclocking then.  Would I need water cooling to cool the CPU for overclocking or would that be overkill?

I would go with the q6600 personally. Sure its a bit slower, but it does have 2 more cores. And the deal with it not being a "true quad core" but rather 2 dual cores on a single die doesn't trouble me a bit. A native quad core will have a slight advantage clock for clock, but those aren't even out out yet and the difference is rather minimal in day to day computing. 2 extra cores > few MHz IMO

EDIT: spelling

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

It depends how much you want to overclock.

There's no such thing as a futureproof CPU.

When are the Yorkfield CPUs coming out?

Not for ages I thought. As for the OP, I'd get the E6850.

not for a while, probably near the end of the H2 of next year.

Personally, I'd go for the Q6600. It might not be a true quad, but you could easily overclock it to E6850 speeds!

Done some checking, as I was downhearted by all your responses.

But it cheered me up a bit. According to lots of sources, Yorkfield stuff is due out Q3 2007! That's pretty soon and just about in time for Crysis.

No wonder the prices on current gen CPUs are dropping so quick.

No, that's pretty old news. Intel gave up their plans to launch Penryns in Q3 of 2007 quite some time ago. We'll probably see the first Yorkfields (in the stores) in Q1 2008.

I was about to post a topic just like this, I'm hoping to build a new pc by the end of the summer, I'm looking at the E6850 myself. Personally, I think it's better IMO for gaming...

Btw theres no such thing as future proof hardware. Theres up to date though.

Which would run Crysis better? E6850 vs Q6600?
Would Crysis be able to take advantage of 4 cores at once?
What about an OC'd E6850 @ 3.6 GHz Vs OC'd Q6600 @ 2.75

I dunno.

They've said it will be optimised for running on multiple cores, don't know if that includes quads, might well do. They've also said it will take advantage of 64-bit instructions, so Vista 64-bit is looking more appealing.

I can't see anyone with either of those CPUs having trouble playing Crysis (from a CPU perspective anyway).

True, Yeah. I was planning on Vista 64-bit, not sure which flavor yet...
