Does anyone know if the SATA DVD burners write any faster than plain IDE ones? I'm looking to get a new DVD burner, and I was thinking about getting a SATA one

The write speed is whatever it is stated for, the read speed and access to whatever is on the disk is slightly improved. As in you get whats on the disk quicker to your MOBO and therefore on the screen quicker.jsnipy wrote:

The limiting factor with DVD drives is the drive itself, not the bandwidth of the interface. PATA offers 133MB/s, that's fine for the 20 or so MB/s that DVD drives operate at. There is no difference in performance.

There is really no performance gain. You will gain having better airflow in your case since you can use smaller cables. Check out the full answer from PC Mag:

My OP may have been a bit confusing because I didn't know how to put it. The information from whatever is on the disk gets to you quicker (does that make anymore sense?).

There is no gain whatsoever, whoever told you there is, is very wrong. Since it is operating over a UDMA interface it is accesing the memory directly (that's what DMA is), so whilst the data may go down the cable faster, the drive doesn't go any faster and the data isn't sent any faster - therefore there is no performance benefit whatsoever.buLLet_t00th wrote:

Even if it was slower, I'd still get SATA. Can't stand having IDE cables cluttering up my case.

I'm holding off getting a SATA DVDRW, because I'm waiting for Blu-Ray drives to drop in price, they should benefit from a SATA interface, since the transfer speeds can theoretically be about double that of DVDRW drives.

At the moment I'm doing freelance stuff, did some stuff for the BBC not long ago, did networking for a group of hotels done in Brighton recently too and I'm on call out for a support agency at the moment - but I haven't had a lot of work this week - hence me being online so much (it's raining loads, I don't want to go out).ReDevilJR wrote:

Good tip - if you want to get rich, do support for investment bankers, they pay shitloads. I've done a few short term 1st and 2nd line support contracts for banks based in docklands, it's good money.
I did Computer Engineering at uni just like you're planning on.

I did Computer Engineering at uni just like you're planning on.
Most burn at the same speed (16x or 18x), however the advantage of SATA is that if you have a fairly new system, then you won't have any more huge, bulky IDE cables in the way.
