hey guys,

k i'm wondering if you can help me out ... i have these specs :

Pentium 4 w/Ht 3.0Ghz
1.5G PC3200 RAM
Stock Gigabyte Mobo
512mb Palit 7900GS
X-fi Extreme Gamer - (i run all sounds at ultra high under the x-fi option, no probs here)

I run these video settings :

I get a max of 30/40FPS and often lag (seems to be worse in bf2142 than bf2 where all settings are high) and i was wondering ... could be stock 315W PSU be killing my frames? It was originally from PC world but since buying it have added the 7900GS, more RAM and an x-fi .... opinions please - i've tested it with some onnline PSU calculators ... to find i should have like a 450/500W PSU ....

A few things to take note of:

- You are running at a non-standard resolution, and it is quite high which is why you are experience a low FPS;
- You appear to be running at a view-scale of 100%, which could be too much perhaps?

using a too low powered PSU would lead to crashes and instability not low FPS generally. Your CPU seems to be holding you back

no, not really. His res is not so much higher than the standard 1280x1024

The non-standard resolution could be a factor.

You should ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS run BF2/2142 at maximum view distance, even if it means running lower settings. Not doing so is really stupid.

The non-standard resolution could be a factor.

well when I change from 1280x1024 to 1440x900 (roughly the same no. of pixels) I don't notice any difference in fps. And going to 1680x1050 the FPS scale perfectly for the higher res.

Max view distance FTW!

EDIT: sure a nice OC on that CPU would help loads

If it is the PSU being underpowered, which is quite possible, OCing would make it worse, not better.

yah, i agree bertster - but what if i were to get the PSU i linked to, then overclock it?

That'd be ok. Don't OC too much though.

OCing your GPU would help more for upping graphics settings.

What is your monitors native res (I'm guessing 1680x1050)? You should play in that - it always looks much better, might run faster too - since it's usually better supported, despite being a higher resolution. 1400x1050 is weird.

If your monitor res is 1440x900 why are you running it at a resolution your monitor can't display?

Run it at 1440x900, that's a much more normal resolution that the game is probably optimised for.

I run the exact same settings, aside from Resoultion, and with a 7600GT,AMD Athlon 3200+,768mb of DDR2 and i easily get 50ishFps, so theres acouple of issues. The 7900's have PCI-E power connecters correct? If he doesnt have his card hooked up to one it will seriously effect performence, as well as the PSU not pumping out enough amperage on the 12v rails. Its not the wattage that matters, its the amperage with PSUs, but in general: Higher wattage=higher 12v rail amperage.

Not.

I dunno how much to OC your GPU, as it's not one I'm familiar with. Just do the usual gradual increments running benchmarks till you get artifacting then turn it down a few notches. The memory clock is going to be doubled, that's why 660=1320.

Resolution: 1280 x 1024.

And I run the game with a mix of medium/high without AA.

Also make sure that your native refresh rate is the same as with your ingame refresh rate, for me that is 60hz.

Between AMD and Intel, clock rates don't mean shit, but in the end, you probably need a new CPU, and maybe a better PSU.
