The general public failed. I see a lot of people posting buildings that were pretty common in their era. A wonder should be something that really stands out from anything else built in history. Something that you would think would be almost impossible to build with our current or past knowledge.
Also, I keep seeing people posting that the "new" 7 wonders should actually be "newer" buildings....NO...that is not what they were voting on. The original 7 wonders of the world are gone except one. So they wanted to make a new list of existing structures that you or I could actually go see. I doesn't matter if they were the Pyramids or the Sidney Opera house....as long as the wonder exists. That is what the vote was about.
By the way Poe....this is why the Redeemer statue got in:
In Brazil there was a campaign Vote no Cristo (Vote for the Christ) which had the support of private companies, namely telecommunications operators that stopped charging voters to make telephone calls to vote. Additionally, leading corporate sponsors including Banco Bradesco and Rede Globo spent "millions" of dollars in the effort to have the statue voted into the top seven. Newsweek reports the campaign was so pervasive that: “One morning in June, Rio de Janeiro residents awoke to a beeping text message on their cell phones: “Press 4916 and vote for Christ. I know it is your opinion...but do you know why they wanted a new list? Because the only existing wonder from the original seven is the Giza Pyramid complex. All the other original seven do not exist and in fact, nobody really knows what they looked like. The new voting was made to create an up to date version based on wonders around the world that STILL exist today....old or new...as long as they still exist, they were voted on. As long as the Pyramids exist,,,they will be part of the wonders of the world. I'm surprised that none of the monuments of ancient Greece (which still stand today) are on the list. I probably would have had the Acropolis as one of my choices.

Very True Cowami....the voting is flawed because some countries made mass campaigns, even the governments got involved so that their local "wonder" would possibly make the list and of course hoping it would boost tourism...oh the almighty dollar or whatever your currency is. This is why the Redeemer Statue and the Sydney Opera house made the short list and the finals. Now, to say that the Great Wall made it only because the chinese voted for it is ridiculous. Metal-Eater...do you have any idea how monumental the Great wall was and is. The Great wall is actually bigger than it appears. Don't forget the human toll that it took to create and its a testament to the chinese people that it still stands. The wall was not the only thing "wonderful", it was the way the Chinese used the wall, how they incorporated garrisons, how they communicated, how the wall defended a way of life.
