Well, I don't care if he played pocket pool 24/7 and was famous for that. Fame means nothing to me. The story sort of developed on its own... the media got hold of a story - that a wealthy well off pro football player gave that all up - to serve his country. And, then payed the ultimate sacrifice. The army apparently went along with this heroic perfect end-game end-of-life picture painted by the media - until it was discovered there is more to it than what is upon the painted surface.
He recieved a posthumous promotion. The citation report accompanying his posthumous awards said that Tillman was killed by enemy forces and contained a detailed account of the supposed battle—which Army leadership knew had never taken place.
