No, its been explained previously, it is the midflight refueling port, however it doesnt actually exist on the Marine/Navy model F-35B only only on the non STOVL versions.daddyofdeath wrote:

You're all wrong.
It's the tactical sign of the standard Martian sub-orbital fighting aircraft.
The engineers at the skunkworks at Area 51 painted it on the hull when they where completing their replica of the 1947 UFO.
Well, when the Martians invade some day, they might mistake the F35Bs for a friendly aircraft and some drunk crop duster pilot can easily approach and steer into the Martian mothership's main weapon.
Edit:
Awww!
Should have read the whole first page. Someone already made a similar Roswell joke...

Actually this picture right here is not an f-35b it and X-35. http://img03.picoodle.com/img/img03/9/8 … de886d.jpg
It's the mark of the devil. If you shoot the center of it the server will crash.
How do you get the "This game will start when....." thing in the right corner like that instead of across the screen?san4 wrote:
About a month ago I made a few movies of various aircraft for my 3-year-old nephew who loves planes. While I was putting them together I tried to anticipate questions he might ask, such as why does the F-35B have a booger on its nose and why does it have a strange doodle on its back.
I asked people if they knew why it had the booger and the best answer seemed to be that it is some kind of electronic sensor, and probably just test equipment not on the final production model. (I also got some funny answers, like it is an ass-scratcher or it is used to impale helicopters and infantry, but I think my nephew is too smart to fall for any of those.) I got mercilessly flamed in that thread so it's taken me a full month to recover my fragile self-confidence and post my second question.
What the hell is the design on the back of the F-35B?

The doodle is on the F-35B in real life:

Thoughts?
15 more years! 15 more years!
+1 for noticing that, but now I'm even more confused because I can't find a photo of an F-35B with the doodle on it.Cpt.Snewo wrote:

I did find a few relevant pics, however. This refueling photo of an X-35 clearly shows that the doodle indicates the location of the refueling port.
Drawings of the F-35A, B and C, from Lockheed. I don't know what these are supposed to represent, but notice that the F-35A has a funky doodle on its back but the B and C do not. (I combined these three drawings into one pic and added the letters.)
An X-35C appears to have the design on it, so it doesn't appear to be specific to the X-35B.
I know what it's used for now, but I am totally confused about which final versions of the F-35 have the design on it (if any).

Are the F-35 and X-35 different aircraft?1s1k_hellspawn wrote:

No the X variant is the development version (X as in eXperimental) the F status is given the craft when it enters service/is picked by the military .san4 wrote:

looks kinda like a fish with bones, but the bones are weirded ..if u know what i mean
I bet that little details (like the doodle on top) can change while the plane is still in the eXperimental stage. That probably means the photo I posted of an X-35 with the doodle on it doesn't mean the F-35 has it? Karma for anyone who can post a pic of the top of a real-life F-35B showing that the doodle is or isn't there.Bernadictus wrote:
