Well, when the Martians invade some day, they might mistake the F35Bs for a friendly aircraft and some drunk crop duster pilot can easily approach and steer into the Martian mothership's main weapon.

About a month ago I made a few movies of various aircraft for my 3-year-old nephew who loves planes. While I was putting them together I tried to anticipate questions he might ask, such as why does the F-35B have a booger on its nose and why does it have a strange doodle on its back.
I asked people if they knew why it had the booger and the best answer seemed to be that it is some kind of electronic sensor, and probably just test equipment not on the final production model. (I also got some funny answers, like it is an ass-scratcher or it is used to impale helicopters and infantry, but I think my nephew is too smart to fall for any of those.) I did find a few relevant pics, however. This refueling photo of an X-35 clearly shows that the doodle indicates the location of the refueling port.
Drawings of the F-35A, B and C, from Lockheed. I don't know what these are supposed to represent, but notice that the F-35A has a funky doodle on its back but the B and C do not. (I combined these three drawings into one pic and added the letters.)
An X-35C appears to have the design on it, so it doesn't appear to be specific to the X-35B.
I know what it's used for now, but I am totally confused about which final versions of the F-35 have the design on it (if any).

I bet that little details (like the doodle on top) can change while the plane is still in the eXperimental stage. That probably means the photo I posted of an X-35 with the doodle on it doesn't mean the F-35 has it?
